In movement one, the original carol melody is changed to half notes and is turned into a three voice canon. The overall effect of movement one is the feeling of three mystics and their camels journeying in a foreign land. At the very end of movement one is one exact phrase from the original piece. In movement two, the melody is used in retrograde to create new melodic material. It is a slow movement. To me, it is reminiscent of the music of Satie or Chopin. In movement three, the new melodic material is created by taking the original melody and inverting it. In the development section, phrases from the original melody do appear. The last two measures also contain an exact quote from the original melody. It is an upbeat, fast paced movement.

Küffner began working as a military musician in the Elector of Würzburg’s orchestra, moved to the court orchestra in the course of secularization (1806–1814) and later returned to military music in the Bavarian army. From 1825 Küffner worked as a teacher, composer and arranger in Würzburg. He composed symphonies, overtures, military and chamber music for wind instruments and strings with piano or guitar accompaniment. Schott also published his clarinet method ‘Principes Élémentaires de la Musique et Gamme de Clarinette suvis de 24 Duos instructifs (...) pour deux Clarinettes, op. 200‘. The Potpourri sur un thème suisse on a Swiss alpine melody was published in 1838 (plate number 2590). The theme is an old yodelling melody. A melodic introduction is followed by a theme and five variations. In the final Rondo, the triad motives of the opening are taken up again.

Bach’s St. John Passion.  São João means St. John in Portuguese, in recognition of the Brazilian roots of bossa nova. For me, Bach’s rich and appealing chord progressions and choral melodies, and the steady flow of the music in this chorus, as well as the popularity of Bach among jazz musicians, justify this adaptation. This movement is a unison, chant-like setting of the Latin texts for Genesis 20:13 (“Thou shalt do me this kindness…�) and Numbers 11:17 (“And I will take of thy spirit�). The soloist begins and sometimes takes over from the choral voices. Mostly unison except for about ten measures (out of the 69) in two-part texture and four measures in three parts. He was one of the most kind and gracious people I have ever spoken to. At the time I wasn’t as familiar with his music, but after speaking with him I found out he had the number one country video in the country and the next year he released this song which was the CMA Song of the Year. It is a great song I’ve always loved and always wanted to play, so this week I did. BTW, the reason I didn’t was because I was working in a church and wouldn’t be free to travel. This once controversial novel tells the story of O�lafur Ka�rason, an orphan boy who longed to read all the books in the world, and aspire to write his own poetry amidst an atmosphere of socialism and communism, while plodding through his personal struggles and forging his creativity in the ruggedly beautiful landscape and indomitable culture of Iceland. While visiting Iceland I came upon this profoundly moving poem by Halldo�r Laxness, and I realized how symbolic it was of Iceland’s people and culture, and how the words of the poem possessed music within it, and this led me to compose this work in the hope of capturing some aspects of the wonder that is Iceland.
