In movement one, the original carol melody is changed to half notes and is turned into a three voice canon. The overall effect of movement one is the feeling of three mystics and their camels journeying in a foreign land. At the very end of movement one is one exact phrase from the original piece. In movement two, the melody is used in retrograde to create new melodic material. It is a slow movement. To me, it is reminiscent of the music of Satie or Chopin. In movement three, the new melodic material is created by taking the original melody and inverting it. In the development section, phrases from the original melody do appear. The last two measures also contain an exact quote from the original melody. It is an upbeat, fast paced movement.

German • Danish.Joseph Küffner was born into a family of musicians in Würzburg. He learned to play several instruments including violin, flute, trombone, guitar and also clarinet. Küffner began working as a military musician in the Elector of Würzburg’s orchestra, moved to the court orchestra in the course of secularization (1806–1814) and later returned to military music in the Bavarian army. From 1825 Küffner worked as a teacher, composer and arranger in Würzburg. He composed symphonies, overtures, military and chamber music for wind instruments and strings with piano or guitar accompaniment. Schott also published his clarinet method ‘Principes Élémentaires de la Musique et Gamme de Clarinette suvis de 24 Duos instructifs (...) pour deux Clarinettes, op. 200‘. The Potpourri sur un thème suisse on a Swiss alpine melody was published in 1838 (plate number 2590). The theme is an old yodelling melody. A melodic introduction is followed by a theme and five variations. In the final Rondo, the triad motives of the opening are taken up again.

The first movement begins with a percussion fanfare that leads into woodwind melodies coupled with the euphonium. Then the percussion takes over again, with a timpani solo feature. The second movement is a dialogue between the clarinet and brass choirs. As the choir masses become more dense, a plaintive solo oboe emerges from the din … molto cantabile!!! The third movement is a scherzo featuring the trumpets and the woodwinds. The percussion section joins in with outbursts and commentaries … The brass choir returns in the last movement with more melodies emanating from the woodwinds. The work ends in quiet tranquility … molto cantabile again!!! The work is dedicated to the effervescent Bill Drury who conducts the wind ensembles at the New England Conservatory of Music. I was very grateful to Bill when he asked me to write something for him and the Jordan Winds at NEC. It is a huge challenge to compose music for large wind groups. I find most concert band pieces too thick and mucky in texture. The trick is to create concert band music that is light and transparent; to orchestrate in such a way that you can see/hear light seeping through. I hope I was able to do that. Bach’s St. John Passion.  São João means St. John in Portuguese, in recognition of the Brazilian roots of bossa nova. For me, Bach’s rich and appealing chord progressions and choral melodies, and the steady flow of the music in this chorus, as well as the popularity of Bach among jazz musicians, justify this adaptation.
