Although it did not win a prize, having entered the competition left me with a neat little piano piece to show for it, as well as the present transcription which I created for flutist Peter Sheridan in 2015. The set of variations opens with the traditional Korean theme accompanied by arpeggios. This is followed by Variation 1, a sad waltz in the style of a Chopin waltz. Next comes Variation 2, a funeral march in the manner of Chopin’s Funeral March from the Piano Sonata in B-flat Minor, Op. 35. Variation 3 is a Tango written in tribute to one of my favorite composers, Astor Piazzolla. Variation 4 combined the Korean tune with motifs from the slow movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, The Pastoral. The set of variations closes with a repeat of the opening passage. -Stanley M. Published by 7plc Music (A0.1017074). Winterreise or Winter Journey takes me back to my days at music college when this was a set study piece. Twenty Four songs with sixteen (I think) in the minor key tell of the rejected lover's journey into winter, leaving behind his rich lover. This is an arrangement of the first song in the cycle. Performers need to make sure that the speed is kept to a moderate walk and that the solo parts, tuba and trombone are not drowned in too much of a Mahlerian style. Just enjoy and perhaps even read a good translation of the text before performing.

The name means by a head, referring to a winning horse-racing margin; the songs lyric tells the story of a gambler who compares that compuslion with his attraction to women. You might remember it from Scent Of A Woman or True Lies. It has appeared on a vast number of movie soundtracks. There should be significant development of dynamics, tempo and colour within my pieces, but I leave this to the interpretation of the player.Notwithstanding the above, my fingerings are important. My pieces are 'guitaristic' in that certain notes need to be played at specific places on the fretboard in order to exploit resonances or harmonies only available when playing them there.

My musical adolescence was spent singing music of the African and African American traditions with Essence of Joy. This piece, written for them in 2015, was inspired by those experiences and integrates spirituals that had special significance to me during my time in EOJ. There are quotations from Over My Head; Bye and Bye; My Lord, What a Morning; Great Day; and Oh, Freedom. During the climax of the piece, these spirituals combine into a moving tapestry of half-forgotten songs. As with most of my music, there is a numerological Easter Egg, a hidden message in the structure of the piece itself, for those music theorists who like deep diving into pieces they are singing.
