The text, however, captures a balance between solemnity and celebration, suffering and mercy, death and new life. In adapting it for jazz big band, I found myself thinking about New Orleans jazz funeral parades, which also feature that same odd contradiction between grief and joy, through the use of the blues. I won't claim this is in any way authentic New Orleans jazz, but it does try to say some of the same things, and I hope you enjoy it. Written for standard jazz big band, with lots of room for open solos by the blues-inclined. Roughly 6 minutes, longer with additional solos. They now have 36 members, still a very mixed ability group, and includes instruments which are not found in the normal orchestra so arrangements have to be made for them. Since March 2020 they have been in Lockdown and unable to meet. It was agreed that they would continue to make music through a form of distanced learning. They receive an arrangement from me to work on and are given a date to submit their audio file which is then collated into a whole piece for all of them to listen to. This is one of the arrangements they have worked on.
