For Solo and SS divisi, a cappella, the music has a light, ethereal feeling. “Beati� can be taken as a sort of “Blessed are they� prefix for the movements which are not direct quotes from the Beatitudes. This movement is a unison, chant-like setting of the Latin texts for Genesis 20:13 (“Thou shalt do me this kindness…�) and Numbers 11:17 (“And I will take of thy spirit�). The soloist begins and sometimes takes over from the choral voices. Mostly unison except for about ten measures (out of the 69) in two-part texture and four measures in three parts. Where the Glacier Meets the Sky is a moving and sentimental choral piece that draws its musical inspiration from a famous poetic line found in the literary epic, Heimsljo�s (World Light), written by the Nobel Prize laureate of Iceland, Halldo�r Laxness. This once controversial novel tells the story of O�lafur Ka�rason, an orphan boy who longed to read all the books in the world, and aspire to write his own poetry amidst an atmosphere of socialism and communism, while plodding through his personal struggles and forging his creativity in the ruggedly beautiful landscape and indomitable culture of Iceland. While visiting Iceland I came upon this profoundly moving poem by Halldo�r Laxness, and I realized how symbolic it was of Iceland’s people and culture, and how the words of the poem possessed music within it, and this led me to compose this work in the hope of capturing some aspects of the wonder that is Iceland.

This piece was written as part of many from a fourth year university piano project and it is dedicated to my good friend Elle who was in my studio throughout school. I am lucky to have a great friend who runs a small media company called Persephone Media who graciously created a fantastic music video for this piece during the height of the Covid-19 Pandemic. This is one of my favourite compositions and I am proud to share it with anyone who may come across it.

I decided to dedicate some of my compositions to this issue. This is the second composition with that title. This three movements composition include: i. Basiliscus (Basilisk) - Legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents and said to have the power to cause death with a single glance; ii. Unicornis (Unicorn) - Legendary animal that resembles a white horse with a spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. Commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin; iii. Centaurus (Cenaturo)  - Member of a composite race of creatures, part human and part horse. This work was requested to be premiered by the project XL with Telmo Marques (piano)  e Sérgio Carolino (Tuba). Was composed between January and March 2012.

In this text, the author invites the Holy Spirit to transform her life by opening her eyes, her mouth, her ears. Each stanza ends with “illumine me, Spirit divine!� May that be our motto every day of our lives! The piano arrangement is structured in three sections (one style for each verse). In the first section the hands stay close to the middle register and the voicing is modest. And the oom-pah-pah rhythms will give it a light bounce that will bring a smile to whoever plays or listens. On the second verse the hands move to a higher register where the music suddenly becomes more delicate. Think of a music box! Lastly, on the third verse we pull all the stops!
