The 1866 extravaganza was an enormous hit, with multiple Broadway revivals and numerous productions around the United States throughout the 19th century. The only extant music from any version of The Black Crook is sheet music published in 1866: One song and four selections for piano solo by Thomas Baker, the show's musical director. This is a unique concert band arrangement of one of those piano pieces, a lively galop that has musical as well as historical interest. The desire for freedom all too often led to deadly consequences. The somber opening of Checkpoint Charlie serves as a reminder of the dark days of a divided city. The ensuing dissonant fast section depicts the discord between rival armies. The piece is written in 3/4 and during the fast section there are several measures that should be conducted in 2 (6/8). Pay particular attention to articulations and dynamics. Students will enjoy rehearsing and performing Checkpoint Charlie.
