Sodium was originally titled Jasmine Variations. It was a setting of poems by Jasmine Lin, who is both a superb violinist and a poet. But that work never materialized; it was never performed. So I thought maybe the work for practical considerations should be a purely instrumental work, without the texts. With a little nip and tuck, here and there, it is now a bona fide string quartet; my eleventh!!! I did not like the sound of the title, String Quartet No. 11. So I decided to call it Sodium. Why? The atomic number for sodium is 11. The quartet is in five movements. 1. Sodium Bicarbonate … Adagio 2. Sodium Chloride … Allegrissimo 3. Sodium Cyanide … Adagio 4. Sodium Cyclamate … Allegro 5. John Cage and I share the same birthday: September 5th. He was born in 1912 and my birth year is 1945. There must be some cosmological link between us because he has always intrigued me - philosophically and musically. 

Recently I was in my colleague Prof. Jeremiah McGrann's office waiting for him to join me for a martini lunch after a day of teaching. I noticed on his desk a hardcover copy of John Cage I-VI. I asked what it was and he said it is John Cage's Charles Elliot Norton Lecture he gave at Harvard University in 1988-89. I looked inside and there were these mesostics. Very sparsely distributed on each page, and it looked fascinating, like some hieroglyphic art. I was immediately intrigued by it and thought right on the spot that I should buy a copy and maybe create a song cycle from the texts. 

Upon further research, I found out that John Cage compiled the content for his lecture using excerpts from works by Thoreau, Emerson, Wittgenstein, McLuhan, Buckminster Fuller, plus passages from The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor and The New York Times. He then created the final text for his lecture by using chance operations with the assistance of a computer program that he created. 

And so I did the unthinkable, create a song cycle of words that has no meaning nor narrative in the traditional sense. Quoting John Cage: I have nothing to say, I am saying it, and that is poetry.

Program note.  

While looking for more poems to set in Italian, I thought maybe Italo Calvino had written some. Unfortunately he did not, but in the process of my research I stumbled upon Cesare Pavese, 1908-1950. To know a bit more about this person, I contacted my Italian colleague, Giorgio Rimondi, who is a professor in Ferrara, Italy. Giorgio gave me a nice summary of Pavese's life and work. So I went on Amazon and bought a bilingual book of his poems: Disaffections. The poems that intrigued me the most were the ones he wrote for his paramour, the American model and actress, Constance Dowling. The last poem he wrote before he committed suicide at the age of 41 was dedicated to her: Death will come and will have your eyes. 

I chose that poem as the anchor of a set of eight poems for the song cycle.

NB: Two of the poems with *** are originally in English. I thought an English setting within a song cycle that is Italian would be a bit jarring. So I asked my friend Giorgio if he could make me an Italian version of the poems. He instead informed me that Italo Calvino had already made a literal translation of those two English poems. I have been a huge admirer of Federico Mompou since my first encounter with his Música Callada on the ECM label with pianist Herbert Henck. Years later I found an album of the same work with Jenny Lin on the Steinway & Sons label.  I was so impressed with her work on the Mompou that I hired her to record my Twenty-nine Fireflies for solo piano (1977-2002).  I have subsequently hired her to record other solo piano works of mine: For Morton Feldman (2017), Préludes ... Hommage à C.D. (2020), Via Crucis ... Hommage à Franz Liszt (2020) and Huit Épigraphes (2021).

So when it came time to write my 16th string quartet, I decided that Beethoven wasn't as inspiring as Shostakovich was when I wrote SQ15 ... Hommage à DSCH (2021).  So, instead I thought maybe I should write a tribute to Mompou for my 16th string quartet.

The playground used to be full of young life but in light of recent events, it seems as if none of the kids really play here any more. Not really that anything happened at the playground specifically except maybe the occasional skirmish. But a few of the kids who spent most of their time here at this playground died over the past couple of years. Rumor has it that this playground is haunted by some of the kids that used to come here all the time… Not really haunted in a scary way because they are kids. But their spirits live here and man are they energetic. All day, All night, shenanigans would happen here and yet, the police could never find any evidence. At this point, the police reports have to say something about ghosts considering they never have any evidence to give an account. The Graveyard Playground tells the tale of five kids whose spirits are confined to this playground.

In this simple but beautiful arrangement the serene, soothing Welsh lullaby is allowed to sing out clearly above a very sympathetic and supporting piano accompaniment. In performance, it would maybe suit two students, as both parts are kept fairly manageable. In the 2nd verse the melody soars up the octave adding to the expressiveness of the arrangement. The choice of harmonies for the piano is quite lush, and the overall effect is one of peace and tranquility.

In the late spring of 2024 I read a review in BBC Music Magazine of an ECM recording from 1994 of Keith Jarrett playing the CPE Bach Württemberg Sonatas. I am a long time fan of CPE Bach's music. But I have confess that the Württemberg Sonatas never did much for me. Maybe it's because all the previous albums of the work were recorded on the harpsichord, which I hate. But, when I heard Keith Jarrett do these sonatas on a Steinway grand, I was blown away!!! 

So blown away was I that I immediately wanted to do my own version of these great works by CPE. 

I am calling my work, after John Cage, Sonatas and Interludes. There will be altogether eleven movements.

If, like me, you’re always looking for a new sound for your festive season concert, want to move away from the usual catalog of songs we hear every year, then Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas could be a good choice. The simplicity of this song sung by Carla Thomas in the early 1960s has been reproduced here in this easy big band arrangement in the original key.

The lines played by strings in the original song work well here on the saxes. Trumpets and trombones reinforce the rhythmic patterns. A new melodic phrase derived from the song itself and played by the saxes replaces the introductory two-measure vamp of the original. This complementary melodic line is heard again during the piece and is repeated an octave higher by the trumpets in a brief interlude between the bridge and the third verse. The fade-out ending of the original has been replaced here by an open section with solos cued in alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet (or flugel horn), trombone, guitar and piano. Alternatively, your vocalist can improvise over these four measures or maybe alternate with a soloist. However, this four-measure section is optional; you could just skip to the last two measures.
