Feeling the smooth keys, I started to play this melody. As I added in the arpeggiating left hand, this piece became the bittersweet goodbye at that point in my life. It wasn’t until I set out to write this piece that I did research on one of my favorite photographic techniques. I always called bokeh those cool looking out of focus lights. Once I learned the techniques name, my fascination with it grew. In my research, I found that the photographs I was drawn to the most were those of out of focus city lights, and out of focus Christmas lights. One had a frantic beauty, the other a more calming comforting beauty. All beautiful in their own unique way. I wanted to capture in music what the photographer captured in film. To capture a certain kinetic electric energy. To capture a certain kind of momentary beauty. To see through music the photographers eye. I never got to meet my uncle and with my grandfather, he passed away in the summer of 2018. I never really absorbed what really happened and I never had the chance to express how I really felt, until I found the poem Libre soy. The piece is based on the funeral poem Libre soy by an unknown author. The main theme is the calming freedom that is an afterthought when it comes to grieving and a homage to my uncle and grandfather.

I began this piece when I was a student with the intention of sending it to a composition competition. I composed the first 29 measures and then left it to do another project. The sketch sat in a pile for a few years until I came in contact with KarlWentzel. Karl requested a piece for the same instrumentation; a piece perform himself and to have for his students to perform. On getting this request, I dug out that sketch and completed the piece. I think it is a fine example of my progressionfrom a student to a more honed composer.Western Serenade begins with a nice pastoral melody tossed back and forth between the two soloists. The piece then alternates between pastoral and dramatic moods and closes with an exciting and surprising presto coda.This version of Western Serenade was written for flute, clarinet, and piano.
