Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.986863 Composed by Ben Pritchard. Arranged by Ben Pritchard. 20th Century,Jazz,Latin,Rock. Score and parts. 19 pages. Benjamin Pritchard #5465. Published by Benjamin Pritchard (A0.986863). This piece was originally written for jazz ensemble and then arranged for concert band. This was done, in part, to make available concert band literature that utilizes jazz/rock instruments (guitar, bass, piano) and improvisation. There are many arrangements of rock and pop tunes available to band directors. While those arrangements sometimes include bass parts they rarely, if ever, have guitar or piano/keyboard parts. Why not? Why not include these parts, even if they are optional? In addition, I’ve noticed that there is very little concert band literature that involves improvisation. Again, why not? I believe that this is the concert band literature of the future – the integrated utilization of electric guitar, keyboards, and improvisation. This piece is my first attempt at such a venture. Having just finished the premier performance of the original jazz ensemble version of 7 to 9 I thought it would be a good platform. Most of 7 to 9 transitions between 7/4 and 9/4. It is a fun, quirky piece with a Latin feel. There is a short 5-bar swing section in the middle for open solos. There is also a one chord solo section later in the piece for less experienced improvisers. The students will really enjoy putting this together, especially with the electric guitar, piano, and bass. It adds a completely new dimension to the concert band as well as an overall excitement. The piece ends with a long building Latin groove with a jam feel to it. The guitarist ends this build with an improvised solo which soars above the rest of the band. It is a fun piece to play but requires a great deal of focus due to the changing meter and odd phrase lengths and entrances. There is only a midi recording available at this time. A live recording will be available soon.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Digital Download SKU: A0.995180 Composed by Anthony Bannach. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 76 pages. Anthony Bannach Music #4735689. Published by Anthony Bannach Music (A0.995180). My first string quartet draws a lot of inspiration from early 20th century composers, which perhaps might be my favorite era of classical music. I am oft inspired by the music from Stravinsky, Nielsen, and Debussy, among others. However, the composer to have the most influence on me for the past few years is Bartok, and I believe it is evident in this work as well. I loved Bartok's use of the tritone as a tonal center, the vast and frequent changes of tempo, and the multitude of textural colors and extended techniques in his works. Most of the extended techniques are found in the second movement, an example of which is the Bartok pizzacatto, which today is a commonly found and utilized articulation. But I also have some newer techniques such as aleotoric passages, originally created by composers such as Charles Ives and Henry Crowell and which saw more prominent usage through the likes of John Cage and Witold LutosÅ‚awski, are still quite new and fresh compositional tools. The third movement is much more song-like and tonal in nature than the first two movements, but really adapts Bartok's style of changing the tempo often to bridge different sections. Ultimately, I see the quartet as a microcosm of the music I want to continue writing in the future, not over-indulging in the intellectual exercises of mid-to-late 20th and 21st century classical music, while at the same time not relying on the tonal and emotional tropes of the past. .

Piano,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1201702 Composed by Brandon Nelson. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,World. Score and part. 24 pages. Brandon Nelson #800317. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.1201702). Jogo de Cartas is Portuguese for “card game.†I opted for the Portuguese to honor my patron for this piece, tenor saxophonist Philippe Trovão of Lisbon. In this work, I celebrate four favorite card games.War is a relatively simple game in which each player is dealt half of the deck. The players play one card and the player with the larger card value wins the “battle.†If both players play an identical value, a “war†is started. There are variations on the game at this point, but in one popular version, each player places three cards face down then play another card face up—whichever player has the highest card takes all the cards. The object is to win all of the cards in the deck. In this musical setting, the sax and piano are each a “player,†and each plays cards (translated into rhythmic values) with the conflict and victory painted in dynamic, sometimes dissonant vitality. In Solitaire, the sax plays alone as one plays this game alone. And, just as in the game, each phrase (or suit-based pile) becomes longer, more complex, and ends in an excited flurry of activity as “victory “ is achieved! The third movement, Blackjack, illustrates the deceptively-simple game of chance, with gradually ebbing and flowing tension until, in this case, the (sax) player takes the hand. The number 21 features prominently in the construction principles of the movement as a hand totaling 21 is considered the best in the game. The finale is a wild ride portraying a newer card game called Egyptian Rat Screw. In this colorful and fast-paced game, players flip one card up in turn, continuing to do so until one player puts down a face card. The next player then has several chances (based on the specific face card played) to match or beat that card. In a interesting quirk, if two players play cards of equal rank, the player who “slaps†the card pile first wins all of the cards in the pile. This unique game was fertile ground for musical interplay, illustrating both the back-and-forth and the more aggressive aspects of play!

Music and song composed by me                                                        ALL  AS  BEFORE   Tired flower bends  the head photos in carved marble sad smell of the past along your tree-lined avenue how much peace in this place where you stand hidden cobwebs on your time and the scent of regret  while I touch your beautiful face  I ask myself who decided that your time would stop and that for you all would be over    I, minstrel of my time, tell a thousand stories  chronicles written in pencil real-life stories story now finished my fingers still drive,  find notes and then the enchantment to disperse them in the wind there was a king in love, by a bewitched spell, with the madwoman his queen and everything comes back as before there tucked away in a corner  There is a pathetic clown Look closer: it’s a little girl and everything comes back as before   You clown what would you do? You want to approach the king and then you want to tell him of her polluted heart but him, he does not want to be touched and you have to amuse her smile and do not tire continue your ... dance ... in the void and silence suspended in time  for your queen and everything comes back as before  before your leap do you want to fly high mixed-up Icarus you have fallen into emptiness   the beating of the heart makes too much noise  rumbles here within into emptiness and silence no, do not love me,  now or ever and hang on till the ultimate pain she'll pressure you and insinuate herself into your mind and end by doing you harm  but I invisible to your eyes and I want to hug you, you do not want I would like to tell you what you do not know of me and then on swings of fantasy  my hand close to yours we'll soar to the heights where she is not there  if you want I will reinvent myself for you And I may please you ,I know but with your eyes you’ve already answered me and hidden I'll go ..   The winter does not end the cold seems eternal  here the sun dies ,effaces itself and then disappears   Once upon a time there was or still is, who knows a minstrel that no longer has a court and he belongs to nobody, and no one will stop him while closing the door ,the king will delete him abracadabra here in my Kingdom nothing caresses, no kiss of goodby my name in history was written in pencil to be able to delete from a faded page   the mind has its woodworm and you can not heal it past, present and she who reigns everywhere    pages of your life flowing through my fingers for a king, tired and sick, who has not had a happy ending the spell is broken and now the veil has fallen regret makes its way into him and the minstrel would approach him  puppet in love ,now disconnected from your wires seek your child and there is nothing like before   there is the sunset in your eyes  but I'm here by your side  a daddy and his little girl and there is nothing like before .... ..... the be.

Baruch HaBa is hebrew for Blessed is He who Comes... (in the name of the LORD). This is a quote from Psalm 118:26 - (Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD). This is also what the people were quoting when they welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem in Matthew 21:9. Later, in Matthew 23:38, as Jesus laments of Jerusalem he uses this same phrase, saying Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! 39 For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ So this was after they had already welcomed him, and now I guess are about to betray Him. Some people thinks this means Jesus will not return the 2nd time til the Jewish people say Blessed is Jesus who comes in the name of the LORD! So this song celebrates Jesus first coming, and invites his next coming.

Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1025435 Composed by Samuel Warren Hatch. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz. Score. 9 pages. Samuel Warren Hatch #4764165. Published by Samuel Warren Hatch (A0.1025435). Piano Sonata No. 1 in E Major is the first series of concert piano works by S. Warren Hatch, written during his undergraduate study at Campbell University. Each movement is distinct, in that each of them is composed in a different form, utilizes different key changes and scales, and takes influence from a different period in classical music. While there is no theme that connects them to one another, they are all in the key of E Major and consist mostly of a waltz-like feeling. III. A Reflection of Passing depicts the shifting aspects about death as a person matures. It’s a piece that came from a time of great loss and much grieving. It begins with an innocent, hopeful understanding of death, followed by a major tone shift, where there is an odd utilization of the piano: the performer sings into the piano while holding down the sustain pedal, which vibrates certain overtones, producing what sounds like a distant choir. The piece closes with a triumphant, hopeful melody, borrowed from a song written by S. Warren Hatch when he was in high school.Composer Notes- Be sure to ensure that the stage hands lift the piano lid before the sonata’s start, as the strings will need to be exposed in order for you to sing into the piano’s body during A Reflection of Passing. For that section (page 22) you will need to face and sing directly into the strings while holding down the sustain pedal for the entire page. If you are playing with the sheet music (don’t worry, I’m not shaming you) simply slide the music holder in order to expose the part of the strings that are closest to you. For this sonata, I encourage you to find your own voice in these pieces. Your own interpretation should align with how you most relate to the message/story they’re telling. This could be using the una corda (leftmost) pedal during lighter sections to further differentiate them, or having a heavier rubato to strengthen the impact of certain phrases. As long as you bring these pieces to life, then it has my stamp of approval.

My specific task from the Hudson Commission was to concentrate music based on the natural habitat and beauty of the Hudson as well as on the time of the first European settlers. It was natural for me to think about old-time fiddling in this light. In 1909 Washington Irving described the Catskill Mountains as a dismembered branch of the Appalachian Mountains. My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600’s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800’s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet. For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward. Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts.Music editing, copying and engraving by Mark O’Connorusing Finale on Apple Macintosh 2007 Composed By Mark O’ConnorCommissioned by the Santa Fe and La Jolla Chamber Music FestivalsString Quartet No. 2 Bluegrass) can be heard on String Quartets No.’s 2 & 3 OMAC RecordsRecorded by Mark O’Connor - violin, Ida Kavafian - violin, Paul Neubauer - viola, Matt Haimovitz - cellohttps://omacrecords.com/omac-14-string-quartets-2-3 Catalogue Number MO169BCopyright © 2007 by Mark O’Connor Music InternationalFor more information on violinist and composer Mark O'Connor, O’Connor String Camps, Touring Ensembles, Discography, Bio, Repertoire and more, please visitwww.markoconnor.com For information on the O’Connor Method – instructional book series for violin, viola, cello and school string orchestra programs:www.oconnormethod.com

2 Bluegrass) can be heard on String Quartets No.’s 2 & 3 OMAC RecordsRecorded by Mark O’Connor - violin, Ida Kavafian - violin, Paul Neubauer - viola, Matt Haimovitz - cellohttps://omacrecords.com/omac-14-string-quartets-2-3 Catalogue Number MO169DCopyright © 2007 by Mark O’Connor Music InternationalFor more information on violinist and composer Mark O'Connor, O’Connor String Camps, Touring Ensembles, Discography, Bio, Repertoire and more, please visitwww.markoconnor.com For information on the O’Connor Method – instructional book series for violin, viola, cello and school string orchestra programs:www.oconnormethod.com
