The title track of the album, Road Song, was previously known as OGD on the Jimmy Smith collaboration, standing for organ, guitar and drums.I beleive it was also named that because the musicians saw the abreviations on the mixing console.This is a transcription of the earlier Jimmy Smith version.The album by the jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, released in 1968. It reached number one on the Billboard Jazz album chart and number 39 on the R&B chart. It also reached number 94 on the Billboard 200. It was his final recording before his death of a heart attack on June 15, 1968. The track was originally recorded by Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith while Creed Taylor was still with Verve, was not released until after Taylor had left Verve.

This is a driving and catchy song arranged for percussion ensemble using 'minimal' gear. I have found that so much of the percussion ensemble repertoire requires multiple 5.0 octave marimbas and crazy amounts of gear so all of my arrangements are for a line-up of one of each tuned instrument and a 4.0 octave marimba - things I have at my schools in NZ (if I am lucky). All of my groups have really enjoyed playing this, especially since they can practice along to the original. It was there when I first first heard his Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, with soprano solo and eight cellos. The memory of that music will forever haunt me. I then recently discovered through a CD box set recorded by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano that Villa-Lobos wrote 17 string quartets. I guess he wanted to beat the number of string quartets that Beethoven wrote which is 16. So this being my 17th string quartet I wanted to pay homage to Villa-Lobos and dedicate this work to him, in memoriam. I took his first string quartet as a model, in terms of the titles he gave to the movements of that work. I. Cantilena … Andante II. Brincadeira … Allegretto scherzando III. I wanted to create something simple enough that other piano players could enjoy it and learn to play it in a relatively short amount of time. It has an interesting mood with curious resolvings. I asked my son how it made him feel. He said it made him think of someone on a journey. Essentially, life does have its many journeys. Some are adventurous and exciting. Some are heavy and difficult. It's good to know there is a Sovereign God who is in control of all of our journeys. He brings comfort to those who seek Him!
