The idea behind these series of compositions was to create easy, short and accessible piano pieces that sounded nice and that would encourage my students to learn various pieces, rather than learning a single long piece.My aim as a composer with this series is to evoke feelings usually associated with the night, such as calmness, tranquility, serenity, among others. The harmony utilized in these pieces is rooted in tonality. However, the fairly constant use of chords with added 6ths, 7ths, 9ths, as well as a few modal exchanges, add color to the harmonic sense of the music, perhaps even contributing to create a relaxing mood.Also, these pieces have a pedagogical edge. They are meant to be utilized to showcase chord triads, broken chords, music sequences, the use of the pedal, among many others. If you are a teacher, feel free to use these pieces as examples for your lessons.The last but most important thing I would like to add is to just enjoy playing these pieces. Do not hesitate in diving into a calm mood while playing these series of compositions, since they were created with that objective in mind. I have written these 24 compositions with the aim of providing complete works (rather than excerpts) for harmonic analysis that utilize chords that follow a sequence commonly found in theory textbooks. Book I begins with Minuet in F Major, introducing the I and V triads in root position and contains nothing else but these chords. The next composition, Waltz in E major, continues with root-position I and V triads and introduces the root-position IV triad. In this successive fashion, each new composition introduces a new chord, carefully avoiding any chords reserved for future study while cumulatively building upon an ever-increasing chordal vocabulary. All twelve compositions in Book I are devoted to diatonic triads and begin exploring non-chord tones but do not have any seventh chords or secondary functional chords.

L’obiettivo di questo lavoro didattico-pratico è quello di presentare l’opera ai chitarristi interessati alla cosiddetta musica antica e di adattare le musiche alla chitarra di uso comune.Per le difficoltà sopra descritte e per l’atto stesso del trascrivere da uno strumento ad un altro, non è possibile ottenere con la chitarra moderna gli stessi effetti di quell’antica, per cui ho deciso di trattare queste intavolature cercando le migliori soluzioni per lo strumento di destinazione, evitando la strada filologica che comporterebbe il rischio di ottenere un risultato ambiguo che non riconosca la lezione originaria né tantomeno una moderna chiave di lettura.Le “suonate” sono numerate secondo l’ordine usato nella pubblicazione originaria. Le legature sono state aggiunte e possono essere modificate secondo il proprio gusto. Non ho inserito gli abbellimenti che possono essere usati a piacere come prevedeva la prassi esecutiva del tempo. Mancano gli andamenti che sono intrinsechi della forma e desumibili dal carattere musicale. I segni di ripetizione sono inseriti anche dove non erano previsti, per cui è stato necessario aggiungere alcune battute di raccordo, lasciando libera scelta all’esecutore. In alcuni casi ho preferito omettere e/o inserire delle note di riempimento e portare al basso alcune voci. Tra gli interventi apportati, i più significativi riguardano le modifiche di alcune note, l’uniformazione simmetrica di passaggi melodico-ritmici come nei casi degli incipit e dei valori di durata. Le modifiche sono state effettuate per rendere i brani più omogenei e simmetrici, laddove non era possibile eseguirli senza incorrere in sincopi armoniche o in ambigue riprese di ritornello, a volte modificando addirittura il tempo da 4/4 a 2/4. Per evidenziare il disegno ritmico ho preferito il tempo 3/4 al 3/2; in alcuni casi il 2/4 al 2/2 e così via, con la conseguente riduzione ritmica dei valori. Per tutti coloro che desiderino effettuare uno studio più attento e particolareggiato, consiglio vivamente di comparare la trascrizione integrale con quella interpretativa e di consultare l’intavolatura originale.

Mostly That is a lead sheet written in RealBook style, which can be played in many settings by a soloist or other jazz combo. It has a 24 bar form, fusion feel and sounds great with a strong back-beat behind its 3/4 time. I chose the key of E Major so that the 6 string guitar could utilize the lowest of its open strings tuned to standard tuning. It really opens up the fret-board. The chord-changes and melody break away from the key slightly at times, to create some dissonance and fluctuation. The solos section evokes blues and a bit of grit with the use of the dominant #9 and flat9. Play the solos with intention and vigor. The title was inspired by a brief conversation I had with a stranger in New York City. I was asked a rather broad question and didn't have a response so I said, Mostly That.   Thanks for your interest in my new tune. Let me know if you dig it. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844381). For this Christmas here is a dramatic a capella piece that is a Fantasia based on the old English carol God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique while expressing, and sometimes expanding upon, each word. There is no Time Signature and thus irregular measures which change every few bars which would utilize 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4, but always maintains a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo. This is a challenging work with dynamic results.8 pages (I have only printed the refrain once (after the first verse) and it is repeated the same after every verse. If I inserted it after each verse this would have been a 19 page score to print. Best to just memorize the short catchy refrain.)4:45 minutesI originally wrote this as an a capella piece. Years later I also transcribed it for Instrumental Quartet. If you do not wish to do this piece a capella there are 15 different Instrument Quartet combinations also published on this site which double the four voice parts and are all in the same concert key and can be used as accompaniment.  The recording attached is of the Brass Quartet version which exactly doubles the SATB voices so that you can get an idea of the rhythms and harmonies.
