Haberl included them in the thirty second volume of the works of Palestrina (p. 80 pp.) taken from a copy of G. Chiti which was found in the legacy of Baini. The Ricercari are composed in a strict motet form. That is they carry single themes (3-5) in the manner indicated in the german preface. The order of the Ricercari follows the eigth modes: dorian, hypodorian, phrygian, hypophrygian, lydian, hypolydian, mixolydian, hypomixolydian. The work can be performed on keyboard, or string or wind-instruments. The tempo corresponds with moderato time (Andante). In the XVIth century it was custom to add diminutions (coloratures) especially if the part was executed by several instruments and one instrument held on the res facta (written melody).

Strohm.  With a difficulty level of 3.5-4, the work is ideal for high school groups looking for a concert or contest piece. The work is tonal, opening with a sorrowful song in g minor that turns into a whimsical waltz in G Major. The waltz returns to the sorrowful opening, which cadences but then sets off immediately into a G Major fugue. The fugue takes an unexpected turn during its development, shifting into a lydian mode that then transitions smoothly back into final exposition and conclusion of the fugue. Caprice for Strings is an exciting work for contest or concert, with a Medium-Advanced level of difficulty. Typical performance time is 8:44. Member, ASCAP.

This is the only known six-voice fugue in music literature; and despite the title, Bach himself thought of it as such, often referring to it as his Prussian Fugue.  By the time of Bach, distinctions had nearly disappeared between ricercari and fugues.  Most organists, however, stick to the painfully slow tempi of ricercari in performance, and speeding it up a bit in this arrangement makes it much more accessible to players and listeners alike.  The FINALE audio extract is a bit misleading, as there is no sound bank for flugelhorns; but you certainly get the drift.  It's a bit of a haul; a C trumpet part has been included as a substitute for the Eb trumpet called for in the score.  This piece would work well as a brass ensemble chart.
