I believe these redefined what classical piano was capable of. However, he never wrote one in the key of C Sharp Major. While I realize I will never possess the skill of one of the best composers of all time, I intended this piece to be reminiscent of his style. It starts with a beautiful flowing left hand in triplets, with lots of modal changes and jazzy chord substitutions before transitioning to a middle passage in 3/4. You will love this beautiful Nocturne in C# Major.

It is atonal, and therefore without key signatures as they would be meaningless. This particular modern style of writing is clearly explained in the performance/program notes, but essentially all notes are natural unless a sharp or flat precedes it. Tied notes are exactly that, but the next occurrence of the note is considered natural since there are no measure lines. It is, technically, atonal but still with a strong sense of directionality, and requires all the expressiveness of music of the 19th century.

We’re really excited to present our collection of sixty of the best-loved hymns ever composed, presented in three books. Arranged for violin, cello and piano they are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. To make the music accessible to less experienced string players, the range of the notes has been kept fairly low so that many of the arrangements can be played in first position, though more experienced players would probably want to avoid open strings. The cello part does not follow the bass but instead plays an independent tenor line using to the mid to upper range of the instrument. The top note in the cello part is the F sharp above the bass clef. The piano part has been kept as straightforward as possible with the left hand playing the bass part. To extend the possible uses of this collection, there’s also a melody part printed in the bass clef, an octave lower than the violin part. This could of course be used for cello solo or indeed for any other bass clef instrument. Included in the 50-page PDF file is an optional bass part which follows the piano left hand and could be used for string bass or bass guitar. With such a small ensemble, a conductor is hardly necessary and to save on costs the pianist reads from the score. For this reason, the piano part in the score has been slightly enlarged. The tune is exclusively on the first part with the second part providing a strong & supportive rhythmic accompaniment. The piece is in G Major with the first part going above the break but not higher than an F sharp. The melody goes both above and below the break and as such the piece has an element of break study for the student. Both parts appear together for ease of reference, and are laid out very clearly. There is a minimum of information on the page and as such the piece can be freely interpreted. This melody makes use of ninths and major sevenths so it creates some interesting sonorities. An easy and enjoyable duet.
