Louis Lambert (1863). ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ After a family trip to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, and Ford Theater, I created a concert band arrangement to solidify the trip in my mind using a popular Civil War song from the North, “Abraham’s Daughter,� and a song used by both North and South, “Johnny Comes Marching Home.� ♫ Music was a means for soldiers to release the tensions of war. By December 1861 the Union army had 28,000 musicians in 618 bands, not counting soldiers who travelled with violins and other musical instruments. Soldiers often sang as they marched by day and at night in camp. Musical duels were not uncommon between Union and Confederate bands. This idea inspired the last section of the arranger where the 2 songs are played against each other. ♫ Septimus Winner wrote “Abraham’s Daughter� in 1861 for the Minstrel stage. “Abraham’s Daughter� pictures a fresh recruit that is on his way to Washington DC to be processed and trained for future battles. ♫ Given the unpublished verses we have, Abraham’s Daughter was undoubtedly sung and embellished by Union soldiers as they travelled from battlefield to battlefield. ♫ Winner is also known for writing “Ten Little Injuns� “Listen to the Mockingbird� and “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?� ♫ Abraham Lincoln had 4 sons, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace, and Thomas (Tad); but no daughters. So, who is Abraham’s daughter? ♫ Oh! Should you ask me who she am, Columbia is her name, sir; She is the child of Abraham, Or Uncle Sam, the same, sir. Now if I fight, why ain't I right? And don't you think I oughter. The volunteers are a-pouring in From every loyal quarter, And I'm goin' down to Washington To fight for Abraham's daughter. ♫ At the beginning of the war, the majority of soldiers, North and South, were fighting to uphold their view of government, each side justifying its position by quoting the Constitution. Southern States saw each State as a sovereign, independent nation. Abraham Lincoln insisted that the United States were one nation. For Abraham Lincoln, the purpose of the war was to preserve the Union. Augustine (A0.837240).       Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) composed his Pictures at an Exhibition -- A Remembrance of Viktor Hartmann in 1874 as a suite of ten pieces (with a recurring Promenade) for piano, representing paintings by Hartmann. The Bydlo section depicted cattle or oxen slowly pulling a cart with enormous wheels. Maurice Ravel orchestrated this section with the high solo given to the French tuba in C (pitched a whole step above the Bb euphonium).  The present arrangement gives the melody to the euphoniums, and changes the key from the ungainly G# minor (five sharps) to Bb minor (5 flats). The tempo is very slow, with an eighth-note at 90, at which speed the piece takes about 3 minutes to play.  The highest pitches are a high Bb for Euphoniums 1 and 2, and the Bb a step under middle C for Tuba 1.  Good high school players should be able to handle this level, which is intermediate (perhaps advanced intermediate). This piece should be a crowd-pleaser, since it showcases the low-brass instruments rarely given solos.  Also, it is a piece that welcomes extra players for both euphoniums and tubas. I had the idea while listening to her practice by brute force –meaning the keys are repeated hit continuously at same tempo, same strength – almost as a pounding exercise.  I thought nuance was not getting into her playing yet (as with most beginning students).   I wanted her to be aware of the musicality innate in a piece of music.Therefore, I loaded this piece up with all kinds of tempo changes, dynamics, etc. A little overkill, but printed music does suggest these things although it might not be written in.Concepts I was going for: Form: In this case a Rondo. Using classic ABACA. Key Relationships: C Major / A Minor. Sections B and C are in A minor, although written in key of C with the addition of sharps (leading tone G ♯). Hand Independence: Scales in one hand punctuated in the other. Scales: Scales found in both hands and the value of scales fingering in a real piece. Phrasing: How different notes are placed together to make a complete thought. Dynamics: Lots of changes written in there and how it relates to phrasing helping make the ‘complete thought.’ Articulation: Staccato vs Legato, voices opposing each other; again helping with the ‘complete thought.’ Tempo: That such a thing as flexible tempo helps with phrasing and completing that ‘complete thought’ we talked about. Pounding beat vs a larger beat: as interpretation such as dance (emphasizing the first beat instead of pounding by each beat. That being said, Kara soon found out there were boys, and from that moment on the instructor never had a chance. She’s 38 now, loves to play this piece and still -- pounds it out. ☺.

A Change in Me from Beauty and the Beast is part of a series of Disney piano solo arrangements for late beginner / grade 1.  Everyone can benefit by learning pieces they recognise, but in the early stages of learning, this can sometimes prove to be a challenge too far.  If the piece is too far outside the ability level of the student, frustration and self-doubt can creep in.The arrangements in this series concentrate on building connections between how the music looks, how it feels, and what it sounds like. To simplify learning, the arrangements are notated at half speed (where needed), do not require any use of sharps or flats, and are harmonised using a 5 - note hand position in the left hand.Short introductions have been added to highlight the hand position changes used in the song.  These give students the opportunity to build their confidence by navigating the changes of hand positions before encountering them in the recognisable part of the song.Catherine lives in a small rural village in Shropshire, England and has over 25 years experience teaching piano.
