I Love You Truly is based on the 1906 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond; a song which stayed on the charts for nearly 40 years. I have created a piano solo of 4 variations with each variation getting further from the original theme and each progressing further into jazz. Variation I - I utilize rich chords of the ballads of that period. Variation II - I rhythmically augment the melody, simplify the texture, and add chromatic passing tones and progressions. Variation III - I set this in stride jazz with syncopated riffing based on the melody. Variation IV - I make this one a slower, bolder jazz with various triplet patterns on fragments of melody and a strong jazz chord progression based on fifths. 5 page score; 2:51 minutes This piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.

Ode to Jane is an intermediate level classical guitar solo, composed by Bradley Powell, in honor of Dame Jane Goodall's 90th birthday celebration (4/3/24). Jane Goodall is a world-famous primatologist and anthropologist, considered the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees. She has changed the world with her studies, and continues to do so with environmental and educational activism.  Brad Powell met Ms. Goodall in the early 1990s, and has composed this piece in her honor.  It is a relaxing waltz style, using intermediate-level classical guitar technique, with both folk and modern jazz guitar chord voicings. This is in STANDARD NOTATION (without TAB). (A version that includes TAB will be available separately, very soon.)

ABOUT the composer: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. Brad also played as the solo guitarist for Disney's Princess Breakfast Adventure at Disney's Grand Californian Resort by Disneyland (March 2019-January 2024), providing music for the Disney Princesses (Belle, Tiana, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Mulan, Aurora, Ariel, Pocahontas, Cinderella, and their friends and guests).

This is the 6th in the series of pretty, technical exercises for the emerging flutist.  Letter A is the melody and letter B is a duet part for you to play with your friends.  Letters C and D are technical exercises of arpeggios and scales.  Letter E lets you practice double tonguing.  Letter F is long phrases and if you wanted to treat them as long tones it is even better!  Letter G lets you practice beginning trill fingering, particularly that tricky alternate fingering between middle d and e. 

I think this is a lovely song and I find that it stays in my ear and I 'hear' it in my mind's ear throughout the day.  It's lovely.

The wistful tune And I Love Her is well-suited to the plaintive tones of the Middle Eastern oud. In this arrangement, the oud melody uses ornamentation techniques including tremolo, slides, hammer on, and vibrato. The interesting piano accompaniment is delightful to play, with varied rhythmic patterns, syncopated block chords, flowing arpeggiated patterns, and sustained harmonies in different octaves.

A vivid and at times raucous celebration of Saturnalia, in Latin, for an ensemble of voices and instruments (including various percussion, woodwind and brass instruments). The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). The words (and translation - both by me) are as follows: Saturnalia Song Io Saturnalia! Hodie igitur dominus noster non es. [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, so today you’re not our boss] Hodie omnes aequales sumus. Io!
