A hypercube is a theoretical cuboid-like fourth-dimensional object. In an attempt to explain spatial dimentions, I created an 18-minute video presentation titled “Dimensions Unfurled� exposing some initial fallacies of common thought, which can be seen on YouTube. All of the music for the above-mentioned video is original. There are two trumpet duets in the section that depicts a hypercube net folding into a hypercube model, starting at 13’20� and 14’51, respectively. Both duets are published in a collection titled “Fifteen-Course Dinner for Two� (available through Gilded Music Press). The two duets share thematic material, and are combined and greatly expanded for this present major six-minute work for brass quintet, “Building a Hypercube�. The first short duet, “Drawing a Hypercube Net�, is presented as the quintet’s introduction, quite faithfully to the original, shared through five parts with harmonic expansion. The material from the second duet is essentially unadulterated starting at measure 27, spanning through measure 70 (up to letter D). From there, the development of thematic material is extensive and interesting, morphing into Escher-types of additional themes and melodies, many of which overlap and intertwine in a fascinatingly complex manner. This unsettling compositional style is indicative of years of profound pondering to fathom the mysterious matter of the fourth spatial dimension. Musically the piece is motivically and thematically unified. All the parts share in the rhythmic complexity fitting for the ponderous topic. The form is roughly sonata form with an introduction and coda, though the recapitulation (Del Segno) occurs in its original key. The majority of the piece (about three minutes, almost exactly half) is the symbolically explorative development section, from D to O. A point of interest: in spite of the piece’s high harmonic rhythm, the introduction is diatonically modal (G Mixolydian). The exposition, after a brief building transition, shifts to the relative D Dorian mode. The lengthy development section shifts tonal centers throughout, visiting various major and minor keys. Beginning at letter O, modality returns for a smooth transition into the recapitulation. The piece ends with an exhilarating coda.

Here'a suite about life in the Isle of Man based on Manx folk tunes and religious music.  All the harmonies and some decorations are mine. There are 5 movements.

 

I MAINLY CELEBRATIONS:  I found all the melodies in The Mona Melodies, a group of traditional tunes (probably heard in Douglas) collected in 1820.  Hunt the Wren is a surprising, lively, traditional event on St Stephen's Day when villagers dance and sing round the town hoping for gifts. This tune is dorian.  A Lullaby in aeolian follows, then In Praise of Wine, in ionian, while at the same time fragments of the Lullaby are heard from inside a home.  The Wren group return.




II FAITH Religious music  I assume could have been heard in Manx churches.  Two supposedly Celtic-style antiphon melodies from a 13th-century breviary from Caen  (a) The Holy Cross (b)  The Saints.  I made them into parallel organum with a drone.  Between them is an elaborate ancient melody (labelled Martyrs) for Psalm 80 (Lord, come and save us), which I found with Gaelic words.  I accompany with 3 more parts.  The whole movement is in dorian mode.




III EMOTIONS:  Mourning for a Prince is a mixolydian tune also found in The Mona Melodies.  I give the tune to the viola.  In Praise of Beauty is sung by the cello in C major.  This tune is also found in The Mona Melodies, as Brown Oxen (Berry Dowin).  William Brown (Illiam Dhoan) (should be Dhone, I believe) is the air used for Love Lost and Found: again from The Mona Melodies.  I made it C minor at first (love lost) , then  the original version in F major (love found).




IV CAR JUAN NAN (Let's All Dance) is a reel, from which I took a few bars and made it into a round.  My source was the book Ed. Colin Jerry Kiaull yn Theay 1:  Manx music and songs for folk instruments




V WORK, REST and PLAY.  The Spinning Song is major/ionian, the Milking Song is major pentatonic, but my mooing bass part does not respect that: I found those tunes in  Kiaull yn Theay.   The Harvest Celebration Dance (Yn Mheillea) is from manxmusic.com.  The Goodnight Song (Arrane Oie Vie) was traditionally sung after a Christmas Eve event in the church, after more formal proceedings and after the singing of many gloomy vaguely religious songs there and a visit to the pub.  Collected from Mr E, Corteen and Mr T.  Taggart of Malew:  my source:  manxmusic.com.

     The dictionary defines revel as “a time or instance of carefree fun.� The verb tipple refers to the imbibing of spirits. A tippler is one who drinks beer, wine, whiskey or other such spirituous liquids. So a tipplers revel would be a gathering of folks who, in the words of Dolly Parton’s “Two Doors Down,� are “laughing and drinking and having a party.�

     This Tipplers Revel is a compilation of traditional drinking songs. It begins and ends with that bane of school trips, faculty sponsors, bus drivers and chaperones, “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.� And between those two bookends come “Rye Whiskey,� “Little Brown Jug,� “Landlord, Fill the Flowing Bowl,� “Jimmy Crack Corn,� “Beer, Beer, Beer (An Ode to Charlie Mops, The Man Who Invented Beer),� “Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight,� “Wein, Weib und Gesang [Wine, Woman, and Song],� “Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes,� “There Is a Tavern in the Town,� “Good Night, Ladies,� “How Dry I Am,� and brief quotes from about a half dozen other melodies associated with quaffing.

     For the most part, this arrangement’s time signature is 4/4 and should be played at about 120 BPM. There are, however, two sections of 3/4 time, one of which is marked “tempo di valse,� and the opening and ending few measures should be played rather slowly.

     The music should be well within the normal range of the group. Possible exceptions: trumpets play their A above the staff a couple of times.

     There are quite a few 16th notes in the allegro sections. (And one could make the argument that at least two sections ought to have been written in 6/8 time. But they weren’t.)

     Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 6 minutes, 43 seconds. Vivaldi's Spring is part of a set of four violin concertos, each representing a season of the year. The Four Seasons is one of Vivaldi's most famous works and is considered a masterpiece of program music, as it provides a musical expression of the events and emotions of each season.

Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying poems, possibly written by himself, that elucidated what it was about those seasons his music was intended to evoke, making it one of the earliest and most detailed examples of program music.

Vivaldi took great care to relate his music to the texts of the poems, translating the poetic lines directly into the music on the page. For example, in the middle section of the Spring concerto, where the goatherd sleeps, his barking dog can be marked in the viola section.

The music of Spring is an interpretation of a sonnet, and it is widely believed that Vivaldi wrote the sonnets himself, as the words and music are so entwined.

King Louis XV became very fond of the spring concerto, ordering it to be performed numerous times, indicating its widespread appeal and popularity.

These facts highlight Vivaldi's innovative and detailed approach to composing The Four Seasons, making it a timeless and celebrated piece in classical music.
