The Big Book of Pentatonics & Fourths is a series of four and six note groups that are developed into chromatic and diatonic lines. The concept of note groups was presented to me by the great pianist Hal Galper at the Jamey Aebersold clinic in 1980. I was young at the time but was hip to pentatonics so his ideas stayed with me and I’ve expanded on them in my own fashion.

Description

A pentatonic scale is any group of five notes that cover the span of an octave. There are literally hundreds of pentatonic scales in Western music, and hundreds more that use alternate tunings.

The Big Book of Pentatonics & Fourths will focus on the most common pentatonic scale, the major pentatonic and its relative minor. In the key of C the notes of the major pentatonic are: C D E G A. If you start on C and go up in perfect 5ths, you will get all the notes of the major pentatonic. The relative minor scale in A minor is A C D E G. If you start on E and go up in perfect 4ths, you will get the minor pentatonic in A.

This piece of music is composed for solo violin. An atonal structure having no reference to any particular key. Using the octatonic scale (i.e. set class [013568A]), as the fundamental structure, and then growing each note in the scale with pre-determined set classes creates this pattern of phononic sound. Using set classes [027], [012], and the complement of set class [027], which is [01235678A], creates the harmonic structure for this piece. Set class [027] is interesting because it contains an axis of inversional symmetry, and hence, has a relation to set class [012]. Elements of the twelve-tone-technique, such as prime form, retrograde, inversion, and retrograde inversion, are used to add depth and dimension to this piece. The difficulty of this piece is classified as: easy to play. Two pages in length and contains 52 bars of notation. The sound is a bit creepy with bursts of tonic fluorescence. 2015 Piano Contest This piece is in the rather unusual time signature of 15/8. One can divide these eighth-note groups into five sets of three, or three sets of five. The piece does both, and each transition is clearly marked. The melody is slow-moving, and the main rhythmic driver is the accompaniment, with tritonic arpeggios through. Advanced level simply due to the unusual features. Not really adaptable to an Intermediate level unless the student has the mindset for the rhythmic challenges. Short duration. MP3 MJIDI audio. MBB.
