Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1152172 Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Wesley Besancon. 20th Century,March. Score and Parts. 62 pages. Wesley Besancon #752386. Published by Wesley Besancon (A0.1152172). Throughout Sousa’s career as a conductor, he often altered the performance of his marches without marking or changing the printed music. These alterations were designed for concert performances and included varying dynamics and omitting certain instruments on repeated strains to expand the range of the musical textures, as well as adding unscripted percussion accents for dramatic emphasis at key points in the music. Although Sousa never documented his performance techniques himself, several players who worked extensively with Sousa provided directions for his frequently performed marches, most notably cornetist Frank Simon. Sousa continued to conduct many of his earlier marches later in his career with these unique alterations, but he rarely returned to several of the marches composed between 1873 and 1880. Although no written confirmation exists for how Sousa might have performed these earliest compositions, select elements of his typical performance practices can also be applied to these marches. “Our Flirtation†is the earliest march for which Simon documented Sousa’s common adjustments in performance. The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa appears in chronological order and is based on some of the earliest known sources for each composition. These newly edited full scores correct many mistakes and inconsistencies found in the parts of early publications; however, all remaining markings and the original scoring are preserved. Additionally, the alterations traditionally employed by the United States Marine Band in performance are incorporated throughout; either those specifically documented by Sousa’s musicians or changes modeled on the customary practices of “The March King.†Performance practices that deviate from the original printed indications are described below and appear in [brackets] in the score. In many instances these indications appear side-by-side with the original markings. An open diamond marked with an accent in the cymbal part indicates that the cymbal player should let that accent ring for an additional beat before rejoining the bass drum part. Second strain (m. 21-38): The dynamic should drop to piano first time through with piccolo, E-flat clarinet, cornets/trumpets, and trombones tacet first time. Additionally, all clarinets should play down one octave as indicated by the cued notes. All instruments rejoin fortissimo and at the original octave in the first ending. A percussion accent may be added in m. 29 the second time. The printed percussion figure in the first ending continues the previous pattern, yet muddies the pick-ups to the second strain and may be omitted for just that one bar as indicated after the downbeat. Trio (m. 39-54): Piccolo and cornets/trumpets are tacet once more as well as cymbals, but trombones have an interesting part in the texture and may continue to play softly here. All instruments rejoin for the fortissimo pick up notes in m. 54. Interlude/Break-up strain (m. 55-70): A percussion accent may be added on beat two in m. 62 and 70, both times, to match the accented chords in the rest of the band. Final strain (m. 71-end): The first time through this strain is piano once more and piccolo, cornets/trumpets, trombones, and cymbals are tacet again. First and second B-flat clarinets should also play one octave lower as indicated by the cued notes. All instruments rejoin in the first ending for the repeat of the break-up strain and play fortissimo to the end.

Piano,Soprano Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1384473 Composed by James M. Guthrie. 21st Century,Chamber,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Wedding. Score and part. 27 pages. Jmsgu3 #968744. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1384473). A concert solo or encore with piano accompaniment. A good encore is essential for a concert as it can be the show's highlight and leave a lasting impression on the audience. While encores were traditionally spontaneous, they have become a customary part of a concert's script, with performers often planning them. Encores allow artists to play fan favorites, respond to audience enthusiasm, and create a memorable conclusion to the show. They can also provide a break for the performers. However, some artists and concertgoers have disapproved of encores becoming a routine part of the show, as they can feel disingenuous when expected rather than spontaneous. Despite this, encores remain an expected and significant element of many live performances.

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1112597 Composed by John Bacchus Dykes. Arranged by Michele Galvagno. 19th Century,Christian,Patriotic,Religious,Sacred. 14 pages. Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele #714606. Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.1112597). Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. The cello, trombone, and horn quartet versions are slightly more elaborated. Additional versions will be created upon request, contact me to know more. This arrangement is dedicated to Martin Smith.

Mixed Percussion Instrumental Duet,Tenor Trombone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1315589 Composed by Brian Kershner. 21st Century,Contemporary. 14 pages. Gordon Cherry #904332. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1315589). Here are the program notes of Trombotriptych for solo Trombone and Percussion by composer Brian Kershner.Trombotriptych is the first piece I have written for the trombone in the main, solo role. I decided to mount the work as a duo with limited percussion, one player, and just two instruments, Woodblock and Bongos. The piece allowed me to learn about and explore the many extended techniques that the trombone can produce. I was grateful to work with the person, for whom the piece was written, Topher Logan, as this is such an immense help. The trombone is capable of great, almost oratorical power, as well as sweet, horn-like lyricism. There are portions of the piece which utilize a couple of different mutes, and the open and closed colors of the Harmon mute, slide and position changes for timbre color, glissandi, as well as multiphonics, which on this instrument are produced by using the voice, singing while playing. There are contrasting tempi in the work, including a middle section which seems barless, although is notated traditionally, and an up tempo section toward the end with exciting interplay between the instruments. It is hoped that the work captures the many sides of this most noble, heroic, and yet vocally pure member of the brass family. The music is appropriate for very advanced performers and is about 9 minutes in length.

String Quintet Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1090921 Composed by Christian Petzold and Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Ander. Baroque,Easter,Renaissance,Sacred,Wedding. 8 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #695065. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1090921). This easy arrangement for violin quintet has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the period minuet form of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be freely played by beginning students due to the ease built into the piece in relation to the author's suggested interpretation. Recommended for performance in academic recitals, and public festivals, it also serves as a study of Baroque repertoire. This famous piece has traditionally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena , a notebook that Bach gave to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with the favorite selections of Bach family members. However, recent research has concluded that this minuet, sometimes referred to as BWV Anhang 114. was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach.

A very famous aria (Ombra mai fu) from XerxesSuitable for any venue requiring meditative music. Excellent choice for a recital encore.Xerxes Xerxes is, in fact, an opera seria in three acts by Handel. Moreover, Handel conducted the premiere performance in London in 1738. Handel casts the opera in Persia in 470 BC. The part of Xerxes was indeed originally sung by a soprano castrato. Nowadays, the part is generally sung by a mezzo-soprano or conversely a counter-tenor. In the first place, Xerxes sings an opening aria, Ombra mai fu to a plane tree. Handel sets this aria to one of his most truly famous melodies. Although many refer to it traditionally as Handel’s Largo, Handel has, on the contrary, clearly marked Larghetto in the score. Handel Background George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in Germany, but eventually became a British citizen. Nonetheless, he was a famous Baroque composer. In fact, he became famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel studied music and, by and large, worked as a composer in Germany and Italy before moving to London. On the whole, Handel was very familiar with the contemporary music of Italy and Germany. Career in England It is important to realize that Italian opera was all the rage in England at the time. Moreover, Handel was really good at writing them. Therefore, he started not one but three opera companies in England. Alexander's Feast was a huge success in 1736, but Handel nevertheless began composing English choral works. After success with the Messiah in 1742) he certainly never again wrote an Italian opera. Consequently, he died in 1759, a treasured genius. Accordingly, the English government gave him full state honors at his funeral. Hence, he is buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Legacy Music historians agree that Handel was in general one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era.  To demonstrate, his works such as the Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remain consistently popular up to the present time. He especially composed the coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest for the coronation of George II. Nevertheless, it has specifically been performed at every succeeding British coronation since. His oratorio Solomon has by all means also continued to be prevalent. As a matter of fact, the Sinfonia from act 3 was featured the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel was particularly prolific. To enumerate, he wrote over forty operas.  Since the late 1960s, we have expressly experienced a revival of baroque music. Similarly, we have especially seen a pique of interest in historically informed musical performance. Since his death in 1779, interest in Handel's music has, all in all, expanded.   Register for free lifetime updates and revisions of this product at www.jamesguthrie.com.

THE GOLDEN YEAR As this chapter of my life comes to a close, I leave behind me a vision; a dream of students living in the moment and making the best out of their high school experience, an image of the vibrant purple and gold bolstered by the classes below, a mark that will live on throughout the generations to come, and the orange skies that will always remind me of where I spent my happiest years. -Chris Paul   Chris Paul, a Jersey Village High School graduate(Class of 2017), wrote this ritualistic hymn during the second semester of his senior year. As graduation drew nigh, he reminisced about the time spent at his beloved Alma Mater, and dedicated ‘Departure’s Hymn’ to his classmates. Traditionally, the hymn is sung by the entire group/organization, while holding hands, in commemoration of those who are about to depart unto new endeavors.
