James Nathaniel Holland is an American classical music composer of operas, symphonies, ballets, songs, and other musical concertworks that incorporate a unique, eclectic, blend of romantic, classical, world and jazz styles. Born and raised in Indiana, he studied music at DePauw University, Vienna Austria, Interlochen National Music Camp and Indiana University (Bloomington, IN). At these schools many of his early pieces were premiered and performed, with one work being selected for main-stage production in the season. Moving to Los Angeles and then settling in New York, he performed professionally sometimes as a singer, sometimes as a pianist, sometimes as choral conductor. He composed incidental music for the stage. In 2002 he founded a composers collective where they showcased their work. He was one of the first composers to participate in the American Music Center's initial on-line library. The New Jersey Concert Opera and the Gay Men's Chorus of New Jersey also featured his comic operas and art songs. From 2005 he moved to Costa Rica where he organized concerts with visiting guest artists to present his chamber music to the public. ISBN 9790570485277.'Plateau of Dances with a Scottish Flavour' Plateau of Dances with a Scottish Flavour was composed in autumn 2016, Eastbourne, and is inspired by my childhood in Doune, Perthshire; as well as the Ceilidhs and Feis (cultural festival in the Highlands) my daughter, Clara, and I were immersed in when we lived in the picturesque village of Kingussie, Badenoch and Strathspey. The four dances are a celebration of my love and nostalgia for Scotland, and an expression of my family's Scottish memories. Each dance comes with a quote from my favourite poet, Robert Burns, whose insightful and sensitive observations are a poignant appreciation of everyday life. Why the reference to Scottish food? Because this piece is dedicated to my father, Papou, who appreciates a merry supper. The 1st Movement, 'To the Mighty Haggis', is a Strathspey with its characteristic Scotch snap -a short-long rhythm, as if saying the word 'haggis'; which is fitting as the Scottish bard's quote comes from his poem Address to a Haggis, traditionally said on Burns' Night. The 2nd Movement, 'The Humble Shortbread', is a Reel; as is usually the case in Scottish dances. It should be played with a slightly 'snappy', swung rhythm. 'What though on homely fare we dine, [...] A man is a man for all that' comes from my favourite Burns' poem: A Man's a Man for A' That. And who doesn't enjoy the humble shortbread? There is a more reflective, nostalgic mood to the 3rd Movement, 'Ode to the Homely (salty) Porridge'. The Air is a reminiscence of the quiet evenings Clara and I would spend in Kingussie, with our view of the beautifully haunting mountains. 'What will I get to my supper, [...] Ye'se get a panfu' o' plumpin parridge' comes from Burns' The Shepherd's Wife who tries to entice her husband back home with the promise of porridge (the Scottish way: with salt). Finally, the 4th Movement, 'Too Many Drams of Whisky', is a cheerful and lively Jig. It's the convivial merriness of being with friends and family, maybe at a Ceilidh, with a wink to Scotland's 'water of life'. 'We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne' comes from Burns' famous Auld Lang Syne: a fitting end to our musical and culinary tour of Scotland.

The complete set arranged wind dectet and bass Romanian Folk Dances Sz. 56, BB 68 is a suite of six short piano pieces composed by Béla Bartók in 1915. He later orchestrated it for small ensemble in 1917 as Sz. 68, BB 76. It is based on seven Romanian tunes from Transylvania, originally played on fiddle or shepherd's flute. The original name for the piece was titled Romanian Folk Dances from Hungary but was later changed by Bartók when Transylvania became part of Romania in 1920. It is nowadays available in the 1971 edition which is written with key signatures although Bartók rarely ever used key signatures. This set of dances consists of six movements and, according to the composer, it should take four minutes and three seconds to perform, but most professional pianists take up to five minutes. The list of the movements is as follows (with the original Hungarian title listed first, the most commonly known Romanian title second, and the English translation in parentheses): Bot tánc / Jocul cu bâtă (Stick Dance)The melody of the first movement, according to Bartók, came from the Mezőszabad (present-day Voiniceni) village that was part of Mezőcsávás (present-day Ceuașu de Câmpie) commune which was located in the Maros-Tordaadministrative county within Transylvania, and he first heard it when two gypsy violinists were playing it. This means that there is originally no piano accompaniment part by Bréval. (If you are familiar with any sonata by said composer, it is likley No. 1 in C major, as it appears in volume 4 of a popular method, which is supplied with a piano accompoaniment.) Even so, as many can attest, most sonatas of the Baroque/early Classical periods are beautiful performed with two cellos, or cello duet.In this edition, I have made the notation modern, the layout clean and clear, as well as providing the score of the two original parts and individual parts, labeled Cello 1 and Cello 2. (For those wishing for historical accuracy in part naming Cello 2 should more appropriately be labelled Basso.) I have elevated it to Cello 2 simply to encourage the performance of this excellent set of sonatas with two cellos. I believe they sound very good this way in spite of being traditionally expected to be performed with a chord making instrument like a keyboard in addition to the solo cello and bass instrument.
