James Nathaniel Holland is an American classical music composer of operas, symphonies, ballets, songs, and other musical concertworks that incorporate a unique, eclectic, blend of romantic, classical, world and jazz styles. Born and raised in Indiana, he studied music at DePauw University, Vienna Austria, Interlochen National Music Camp and Indiana University (Bloomington, IN). At these schools many of his early pieces were premiered and performed, with one work being selected for main-stage production in the season. Moving to Los Angeles and then settling in New York, he performed professionally sometimes as a singer, sometimes as a pianist, sometimes as choral conductor. He composed incidental music for the stage. In 2002 he founded a composers collective where they showcased their work. He was one of the first composers to participate in the American Music Center's initial on-line library. The New Jersey Concert Opera and the Gay Men's Chorus of New Jersey also featured his comic operas and art songs. From 2005 he moved to Costa Rica where he organized concerts with visiting guest artists to present his chamber music to the public. Presently he lives in a castle in the central mountains of Costa Rica. Mozart composed the Divertimento, K. 136, during down-time in Salzburg in the winter of 1772, following two extended periods in Italy. This Divertimento is in three movements, fast-slow-fast after the manner of the Italian sinfonia. The opening Allegro, in sonata form, centers around a delightful, charming theme that ends with an amusing little dynamic retreat. The Andante is typically warm and elegant, its two halves contrasted by a brief acceleration in the accompaniment's pulse. A spirited Presto finale brings the Divertimento, a fine example of Mozart's ambitious work in a genre traditionally designated as light music, to a close. This arrangement for flute quartet (Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3, Flute 4 or Alto Flute) of the entire Divertimento is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Directors will have the opportunity to discuss modes, blues scales, and medieval plainchant. The piece mixes quasi-Dorian and blues scales and is grounded around the pitch concert D; therefore, the piece is largely in d-minor, a highly accessible key for emerging musicians. Students will have the opportunity to perform a variety of articulations, rhythms, accidentals and tempi. In addition, the numerous texture and mood changes will challenge the musicianship skills of the performers. The syncopated rhythms and quarter-note triplets will also provide for excellent teachable moments.The use of medieval modes in jazz certainly isn't a new concept as artists like Miles Davis utilized Dorian in So What, and John Coltrane as well in Impressions. Traditionally, modes have been found in instrumental music for centuries as seen in Sibelius' 6th Symphony, and more recently employed in wind band examples for students such as Elliot del Borgo's Dorian Rhapsody. Dorian Blues, however, is perhaps the first piece for young band that combines medieval chant on D Dorian with jazz-like rhythms and blue-notes.

Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. The cello, trombone, and horn quartet versions are slightly more elaborated. Additional versions will be created upon request, contact me to know more. This arrangement is dedicated to Martin Smith.
