Little Waltz for a Dancing Occasion is intended for junior players and can be performed on virtually any combination of five or more woodwind and/or brass instruments. It is based on my own experience of working with such groups.This waltz is perhaps a little unconventional in that it does not make use of a strong first beat – traditionally played by bass instruments – followed by weaker second and third beats. Furthermore, in this piece most of the phrases are five, seven or nine measures long, thus departing from the four- or eight-measure phrases many players will be used to. From measure 22 the melody in 3/4 time has an accompaniment that is essentially in 2/4 time; I’ve included accents here to help ensure a 2/4 feel. There’s also a rather abrupt ending which, hopefully, will take some by surprise. And everybody gets the tune at some stage, not just the usual melody instruments!The parts included are suitable for the instruments found in groups of learners:flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, bassoonEb alto sax, Bb tenor saxBb trumpet, F/Eb horn, trombone (TC/BC), euphonium (TC/BC), tuba, Bb/Eb bassThe high flute/oboe part is optional. Myrthen, or “myrtles,� were the flowers traditionally associated with a marriage celebration. Schumann completed the Myrthen cycle in 1840, totaling 26 Lieder (songs for solo voice and piano), with texts by prominent 19th-century German poets such as Heinrich Heine, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. “Widmung,� which means “Dedication,� is the first song in the cycle, based on a love poem by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866). The frequent repetition of the word “you� in the text, along with the soaring melody and undulating arpeggios that comprise the music, all serve to convey the composer’s state of blissful fulfillment as he contemplates marrying his beloved. This arrangement preserves Schumann’s original piano part as well as places the melody prominently in the top soprano voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. It was premiered in 2013 by the University of Michigan Women’s Glee Club under the direction of conductor Jaclyn Johnson. The arrangement is also available in a version for TTB voices.

Sukhothai (The Dawn of Happiness) This movement reflects the ideal state, a land of plenty, and is peaceful. II. Ayutthaya This movement reflects a period of wealth that is characterized by wars with Burma. III. The Chakri Dynasty This movement reflects the more hectic pace of modern society where Thailand moves from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. Folk music of Thailand is built on a seven-note scale of equal intervals. The fourth and seventh notes of this scale are often used only for ornamental purposes. In order to approximate this scale, a pentatonic scale is used as it is like a major scale with the fourth and seventh tones removed. The pre-recorded sounds approximate some of the instruments traditionally used in Thai folk music.
