String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1489644 Composed by Welsh Traditional. Arranged by James M. .Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #1066516. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1489644). Deck the Halls is a traditional Christmas carol with a rich history and cultural significance:Origin and Melody: The melody of Deck the Halls is derived from a Welsh tune called Nos Galan, which dates back to at least the 16th century. The carol's melody was initially associated with Welsh New Year's Eve celebrations.Lyrics: The English lyrics were written by Scottish musician Thomas Oliphant in 1862. These lyrics were published alongside the original Welsh lyrics in a collection of Welsh melodies.Cultural Context: Originally, Nos Galan was a competitive Welsh drinking song. Participants would take turns singing verses around a fire during New Year's Eve gatherings. The transition from a New Year's song to a Christmas carol occurred when the English lyrics were adapted to focus on Christmas themes.Meaning and Usage: The phrase deck the halls means to decorate for Christmas, traditionally with boughs of holly and other festive adornments. The term deck in this context means to decorate or adorn, and it is derived from the Middle Dutch word dekken, meaning to cover.Variations and Adaptations: Over time, the lyrics have been adapted in various ways, including changing the words to reflect different cultural or religious contexts, such as replacing Christmas with Yule or Yuletide.Overall, Deck the Halls is a beloved carol that combines elements of Welsh tradition with Victorian-era English lyrics, celebrating the festive spirit of the holiday season.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1334145 Composed by Trad & Alan Edgar. Folk,Traditional. 36 pages. Alan Edgar Ted Moon #920362. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1334145). Here'a suite about life in the Isle of Man based on Manx folk tunes and religious music.  All the harmonies and some decorations are mine. There are 5 movements. I MAINLY CELEBRATIONS:  I found all the melodies in The Mona Melodies, a group of traditional tunes (probably heard in Douglas) collected in 1820.  Hunt the Wren is a surprising, lively, traditional event on St Stephen's Day when villagers dance and sing round the town hoping for gifts. This tune is dorian.  A Lullaby in aeolian follows, then In Praise of Wine, in ionian, while at the same time fragments of the Lullaby are heard from inside a home.  The Wren group return.II FAITH Religious music  I assume could have been heard in Manx churches.  Two supposedly Celtic-style antiphon melodies from a 13th-century breviary from Caen  (a) The Holy Cross (b)  The Saints.  I made them into parallel organum with a drone.  Between them is an elaborate ancient melody (labelled Martyrs) for Psalm 80 (Lord, come and save us), which I found with Gaelic words.  I accompany with 3 more parts.  The whole movement is in dorian mode.III EMOTIONS:  Mourning for a Prince is a mixolydian tune also found in The Mona Melodies.  I give the tune to the viola.  In Praise of Beauty is sung by the cello in C major.  This tune is also found in The Mona Melodies, as Brown Oxen (Berry Dowin).  William Brown (Illiam Dhoan) (should be Dhone, I believe) is the air used for Love Lost and Found: again from The Mona Melodies.  I made it C minor at first (love lost) , then  the original version in F major (love found).IV CAR JUAN NAN (Let's All Dance) is a reel, from which I took a few bars and made it into a round.  My source was the book Ed. Colin Jerry Kiaull yn Theay 1:  Manx music and songs for folk instrumentsV WORK, REST and PLAY.  The Spinning Song is major/ionian, the Milking Song is major pentatonic, but my mooing bass part does not respect that: I found those tunes in  Kiaull yn Theay.   The Harvest Celebration Dance (Yn Mheillea) is from manxmusic.com.  The Goodnight Song (Arrane Oie Vie) was traditionally sung after a Christmas Eve event in the church, after more formal proceedings and after the singing of many gloomy vaguely religious songs there and a visit to the pub.  Collected from Mr E, Corteen and Mr T.  Taggart of Malew:  my source:  manxmusic.com.DURATION: 15 minutes.

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.773302 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Yoel Epstein. Celtic,Christian,Folk,Holiday. Score and parts. 41 pages. Yoel Epstein #3236529. Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773302). If ever there was a nation with song in its heart, it is the Welsh. These five traditional Celtic folksongs are among the best known and best loved of all folk music. Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through The Night), first published in 1784 in Edward Jones's anthology of folk songs,  Musical and Poetical Relics of the Welsh Bards, became one of the most popular hymns in the English-speaking world. A popular Christmas song, All Through the Night also appears in numerous films and stage productions, beginning with John Gay's opera of 1728 and up to the present day. Calon Lân (a pure heart), a traditional Celtic tune with lyrics later written by Daniel James (Gwyrosydd) in the 1890s, has become the anthem of the Welsh Rugby league. Llwyn Onn (The Ash Grove) was first published in 1892 in The Bardic Museum by harpist Edward Jones. In its English version, with words written by poet Thomas Oliphant, it is traditionally sung in America on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dafydd y Gareg Wen (David of the White Rock). This song was written by David Owen, a harpist who died about 1720 at the tender age of 29. Tradition says that Owen was lying on his deathbed, and called for his harp. Too weak to hold the harp, he was helped by his wife, who held the harp upright while he played this haunting tune. Rhyfelgyrch Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech) describes the seven-year siege of Harlech Castle between 1461 and 1468. Commanded by Constable Dafydd ap Ieuan, the Welsh garrison withstood the longest known siege in the history of the British Isles I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you enjoy this, you are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. You can see them at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/yoel-epstein-sheet-music/3001988?ac=1. Arranged by James Pybus. Christmas,Folk,Holiday,Standards,Traditional. 10 pages. James Pybus #754230. Published by James Pybus (A0.1153960). Auld Lang Syne is a popular song, particularly in the English-speaking world. Traditionally, it is sung to bid farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. By extension, it is also often heard at funerals, graduations, retirements, and as a farewell or ending to other occasions. The text is a Scots-language poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 but based on an older Scottish folk song. In 1799, it was set to a traditional tune, which has since become standard. The poem's Scots title may be translated into standard English as old long since or, less literally, long long ago, days gone by, times long past, or old times. Consequently, for auld lang syne, as it appears in the first line of the chorus, might be loosely translated as for the sake of old times. This SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet arrangement gives each player an opportunity to play the melody. It is suitable for a wide variety of concerts, performance settings, or other occasions. The duration is 1:50. Contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1315131 By Jeff Bjorck. By Traditional. Arranged by Jeff Bjorck. Christian,Christmas,Classical,Religious,Traditional. Score. 4 pages. Pure Piano Music by Jeff Bjorck #903874. Published by Pure Piano Music by Jeff Bjorck (A0.1315131). Jeff Bjorck's original solo piano arrangement of this age-old Christmas carol appears on his album/CD The Wondrous Gift: A Pure Piano Christmas.  This carol is actually a lamenting lullaby for the infants killed when Herod tried to destroy Jesus. Thus, Bjorck changes the major chord traditionally closing each verse to minor in tribute to “Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted†(Matthew 2: 18)—and to honor to everyone who remembers departed loved ones at Christmas.
