Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. The work, originally composed for Pope Gregory, was traditionally performed at Palm Sunday Mass, but is a joy to hear any time of the year.Duration: 8'40, using the provided tempo markings. The conductor may wish to take slower tempos, following the tradition of vocal performances of this work. In that case,  a duration of 10-11 minutes is typical.  An excellent demonstration of counterpoint and harmony, Stabat Mater is an enduring classic.

This Baroque piece was originally written by Jean Loeillet as part of a Harpsichord Suite.  It is written in the Italian Corant style in the characteristic Fast(Allegro) 3/4 with rapid running passages of eighth notes (quavers) which alternate scalar steps with large leaps.  Traditionally the piece would have been performed very cleanly, not legato.My arrangement takes the melody and passes it between the three instrument parts.  I wrote a highly ornamented continuo for each part when not playing melody.  In true Baroque style I have created a tight interplay between the parts.  Each part also has a rather wide range of about 2 octaves.  Although in a Minor Key, this piece is very bright and uplifting.  It is very accessible and thus a concert crowd pleaser.   Great for the student recitals too to learn and show mastery of Baroque techniques of clean ensemble playing and ornamentation.  Most of all, this piece is just Pure Fun!6 pages score, 2 pages @ partRanges -Violin -  bottom space F# to high E above staffClarinet - bottom line E# to high B above staffTrombone - low C below staff to high E above staffrecording is of Violin/Trumpet/Trombone, clarinet would substitute for the trumpet part.

Published by Cat McGill (A0.887694). This is a poignant and haunting sea shanty, traditionally sung as the sailors were pumping out the ship at the end of the voyage, before they went home. Sometimes it was used to air their gripes about the trip, quality of the food etc(!) so I have chosen some of the less sweary verses from the ones I found, and edited slightly in places!It's arranged in four parts for a cappella community choir. I've scored it out as the tenors and basses leading and all parts joining on the refrain, but you can have everyone singing the lead in unison if you want.

Charlotte Elliott's classic text Just As I Am is paired up with EVERGREEN, a soaring and expansive tune that suggests greater dignity than the tune traditionally associated with these words. Like SINE NOMINE and ENGELBERG, this tune begins on the 2nd beat of a 4/4 rhythm and evokes the soaring nature of classic Church of England hymnody. In hymn form, the tune can be used as a processional  (O Lamb of God, I come!). As an anthem, it can be used at the offertory, just before the beginning of the Eucharistic prayer. Choirs and congregations will be inspired by this song in Lent or any time of year. .
