Organ - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.890713 Composed by John Pitts. Baroque,Christian,Contemporary,Sacred. Score. 20 pages. Intensely Pleasant Music #3424723. Published by Intensely Pleasant Music (A0.890713). Passacaglia (2000-2012) for Organ - 6 minutes  This piece exists in versions for organ (this one - the original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001), and finally a piano duet version completed in 2012.   The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes).  Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨  - F G - D E¨ - B C -   F G   - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.

Brass Quintet Baritone Horn TC,Bass Trombone,Cornet,Euphonium,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1246889 Composed by Rob Bushnell. 21st Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,Traditional. 35 pages. RBMusic #841560. Published by RBMusic (A0.1246889). This fanfare was written to enter the Arts Active's Fanfare Competition, in celebration of St. David's Hall 40th Birthday. In writing this piece, I researched the musical history of St. David’s Hall. Unfortunately, it has proven very difficult to find specific songs/pieces from some of the key events (the only clip I could find was the Cory Band playing John Mile’s Music), so I focused on brass bands and Wales. The pieces incorporates Men of Harlech (Rhyfelgyrch Gwŷr Harlech), Land of My Fathers (Hen Wlad fy Nhadau) and Philip Sparke’s The Year of the Dragon. Growing up with brass band, I heard Men of Harlech a lot and it has always been my “go to†Welsh piece. Land of My Fathers is the unofficial anthem of Wales. As for The Year of the Dragon, it was used both times that St. David’s Hall has hosted the European Brass Band Championships: it was used as the set test pieces in 1986 for Desford Colliery Dowty Band’s historic victory (under Howard Snell) and as the own choice test piece in 1992 as part of Britannia Building Society (now Fodens) Band’s winning performances (again under Howard Snell). The Year of the Dragon is also a popular piece of music in the brass-band world and has much significance to me personally. The name of piece comes from the GPS location of St. David’s Hall (51.48022° N, 3.17653° W), rounded to the nearest integer: the actual location of 51° N, 3° W is just off of the A378 in North Curry in Taunton, Somerset, England. The competition stipulated that the fanfare was to be composed for a maximum of five standard brass band instruments and so was written for 2 Cornets, Tenor Horn, Trombone or Euphonium and Eb Bass. An additional score and parts have been provided for a more traditional brass quintet set up.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.887067 Composed by Marilena Zlatanou. Contemporary. 21 pages. Marilena Zlatanou #3035601. Published by Marilena Zlatanou (A0.887067). This composition is built in form as a traditional Mass, but the text used comprises of a selection of only a few words of those usually applied in the traditional Mass movements. The text used, described in detail, is as follows:1. As Kyrie movement: Only the word ELEISON (Have Mercy On Us) 2. As Gloria movement: Only the word GLORIA (Hail)3. As Credo movement: Alternative text: Paul’s 1:13 Corinthian (on love)4. As Sanctus / Benedictus: Only the sentence: PLENI SUNT COELI ET TERRA GLORIA TUA (The Sky and the Earth are full of Thy Glory)5. As Agnus Dei: Only the sentence DONA NOBIS PACEM (Give Us Peace)The text selection is a result of the intention to concentrate on the essence and the universal character of each movement, without getting into conflict with the dogmatic parts of the original text. This is also the reason for the use of the word alternative in the title. The writing is fairly melodious and tonal, with some contemporary effects. The individual movements may also be used seperately.Duration of the whole mass lasts for about 20 minutes. The individual movements vary from 2 and a half to 7 minutes. The attached mp3 file (of the last movement) is a converted sibelius file. Please visit website www.zlatanou.net for more information.Member of TONO, the Norwegian copyright org.
