Composed by Irish traditional carol. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Celtic,Christmas,Folk,Irish,Sacred. Score and parts. 9 pages. Con Spirito Music #6168353. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726112).

The Wexford Carol is an Irish carol that is thought to date to the 12th century. It achieved wide popularity in the 20th century due to its inclusion in The Oxford Book of Carols.

Like many folk and traditional songs, it was transcribed from the performance of a local singer - in this case, by William Grattan Flood (1857-1928), an Irish musicologist, composer, and organist who collected it from a singer in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland.

This arrangement for solo trombone with piano accompaniment features an impelling rhythmic foundation, rich harmonies, and a lovely countermelodic line for flute.

Includes piano score, solo trombone part in both bass clef and Bb treble clef, and solo flute part.

Composed by Traditional English Carol. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christmas,Sacred. Score and parts. 15 pages. Con Spirito Music #2957889. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726016).

A Virgin Most Pure is an English traditional carol that appeared in Davies Gilbert's A Collection of Ancient Christmas Carols, with the Tunes to which they were formerly sung in the West of England (London, 1822). The first verse and refrain are as follows:

A virgin most pure, as the prophets do tell, / Hath brought forth a baby, as it hath befell; / To be our Redeemer from death, hell, and sin, / Which Adam's transgression had wrapped us in.

[Refrain] Aye, and therefore be merry; / Rejoice, and be you merry; / Set sorrow aside; / Christ Jesus our Saviour was born on this tide.

The tune is built upon the Mixolydian scale (seventh mode), having the same sequence of tones and semitones as a major scale but with a lowered seventh degree. In this arrangement, the occasional addition of the flat seventh to the tonic chord and its use as a leading tone in some harmonic progressions emphasizes the modal quality of the tune.
