We Three Kings is a much-loved Christmas carol. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Waltz style for one Oboe and one Cor Anglais (or English Horn).  Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

We Three Kings was written in 1857 by a Pennsylvanian rector, John Henry Hopkins Jr. His friends and family encouraged him to publish the carol, and after it first appeared in print in 1863, its popularity spread to an international audience.

With a performance time around three minutes, this version of We Three Kings is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz waltz style is a fun and fresh take on this familiar traditional tune.

We Three Kings is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Rhythms are syncopated, as one would expect in a jazz waltz, and there is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic swing style. Silver Wedding, (Die Silberne Khasene in Yiddish), is a Jewish Folk tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Cor Anglais, (or English Horn).

Jewish Wedding bands, prominent in early twentieth century New York, were well placed to take advantage of the phonograph recording revolution. Accordingly, we are fortunate to have a rich record of the musical style of the time. Silver Wedding first appeared in a 1915 recording by Abe Elenkrig’s Orchestra. Elenkrig was born in Ukraine, which may point to the origins of the tune. Silver Wedding is in a Bulgar style, a happy piece designed to escort the newly-weds from the ceremony to the feast.

Silver Wedding is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a short introduction and coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Silver Wedding is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around three minutes, this version of Silver Wedding is perfect for weddings, celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. Just a Closer Walk With Thee is an Afro-American Spiritual Hymn and Song. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Cor Anglais (or English Horn).

Little is known of the origins of Just a Closer Walk With Thee, other than it was sung in African-American churches in the nineteenth century. National religious conventions in the 1930s gave the hymn a wider audience. Many versions were recorded in the 1940s and Just a Closer Walk With Thee was quickly adopted as a standard by the New Orleans Jazz revival.

From the Foreword: Why “Christmas in Dettelbach�? Since 1989, I’ve had the pleasure of living in a historic house in the old town centre of Dettelbach in Lower Franconia in Germany. Small as it is, Dettelbach – complete with medieval encircling fortified wall, Gothic parish church, late Gothic Town Hall, Pilgrimage church, and many half-timbered houses – has officially been a town since 1484. A very picturesque place! When my children were growing up, we had ‘Song Time’ at the piano every evening after dinner. During Advent, we’d sing innumerable English and German carols. This little collection of 12 carols, half English, half German, is just a tiny fraction of our favourites – as not all dear old Christmas carols lend themselves to a contemporary treatment. The main challenge here was to make the arrangements as simple, but as lyrical and contemporary as possible, with my piano students in mind, who are generally bored with standard arrangements of all-too-familiar Christmas songs.
