This score is based on the soundtrack to HBO’s Game of Thrones TV mini-series, rather than on the simplified piano arrangement published by Hal Leonard. Ramin Djawadi, the Iranian-German composer of the original soundtrack said, in interview, he used a traditional Japanese tako drum in the background.  The TV producers told him : No flutes.  He particularly likes to use the cello in his scores and also to have unusual instruments.   In my arrangement, I used the cello as the lead instrument, together with strings, a tako drum and bass brass.  Also at the end is a very short solo by a Japanese shamisen, a traditional three-string guitar and a short choral background, as in the original score.   The tako drum can be replaced by a bass drum;  the shamisen can be replaced by an acoustic guitar; and the voices are purely optional. To enable you to listen to the full score, I’ve created a video on Vimeo, adding a new audio soundtrack of my score to the opening titles. Sweetwater Brass Press #4331333. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808689).      William Benton Overstreet did it all-played piano, wrote songs, led bands. Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since.     This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper.     For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments.     Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64.     This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Originally he viewed it as a fight song for the football team, but later the piece was adapted as the unofficial March of the US Navy. It appears hear as a piano solo with no pedalling, although the arranger hopes that the player might feel free to use some pedalling here and there.

This song starts with the narrator/lyricist saying that he overheard a guy at the train station trying to say farewell to his girl.  The guy would kiss her, bid her adieu, get on the train, then get off and do the whole thing over again.  And, he did this seven times!  What would he say to her each time?  He’d tell her that he’s leaving, that she shouldn’t cry, that he’ll write and that if she does not hear from him she should assume he’s been arrested.  What a romantic line!     Anyway, that’s the gist of the “Toot, Toot, Tootsie!� lyrics.  Credited to Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo, New York City’s Leo Feist, Inc. first published this upbeat, leave-taking song in 1922.  It had been one of 29 numbers featured in the 1921 Broadway production Bombo, a vehicle designed to showcase the talent of Al Jolson.  Six years later Jolson sang it in The Jazz Singer, generally recognized as the first sound feature film.  Additionally, all three composers, plus Ted Fio Rito and Eddie Cantor, also made early and very popular recordings.    This bubbly, cheerful arrangement opens in the key of F major with a suggested tempo of 120 BPM.  After an 8-measure introduction, the piece goes right to the familiar chorus with Trumpet 1 and Trombone switching leads and ending with a wonderful Fillmore-style smear.  The tempo then slows dramatically for a somewhat pensive interpretation of the verse, the narrator’s observations, Horn and Trumpet 1 alternating the lead.  At measure 67 the chorus repeats faster than ever, a recommended 132 BPM, as Trombone and the two Trumpets take turns with the melody.  This leads right into a repeat of the verse—this time played at full speed—and a change of key to D-flat major.  Trombone and Tuba play in unison, exchanging the melody with Trumpets, right on into the third go-round of the chorus.  The piece wraps up with a vaudeville-style conclusion and eventually fades away.  (But don’t miss Trombone's four-measure reference to “Charlottetown Is Burning Down/Goodbye, Liza Jane� at measure 141.)Lots of fun!    Completed in 2023, performance time at the suggested tempo runs about 2 minutes, 47 seconds. This is a full score Yoon Jae Lee's arrangement of the wedding march for string quartet. The set of parts is available separately. Mendelssohn’s wedding march is a ubiquitous piece for any seasoned wedding musician. A quick search online reveals that there are more than a few dozen arrangements of this work for string quartet alone! So why create another one? Many of the arrangements currently in circulation are of extremely poor quality, both from a musical and publishing standpoint. Too often they give little regard to what Mendelssohn actually wrote and are rendered as if the arranger was recalling the music by ear. My new arrangement was created with a fresh examination of the original orchestral score. Here are some key highlights: 1. It preserves the structural integrity of the music (i.e. same exact number of bars as the original) 2. Maintains a balance between the original context and rewriting the music idiomatically for string quartet. 3. Aims to be of high artistically yet playable by most string players above an intermediate level (There are double stops and a few triple stops but nothing unmanageable). 4. No unnecessary articulations, bowings or fingerings have been added. The basic spirit of the music is left untouched and skilled musicians can make their own interpretive decisions with fresh insight into the music. 5. A clean, high quality engraving with bar numbers added. An abridged arrangement of the first 29 bars of march is also available so don’t use a cheap, free arrangement online of this important work. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed a set of six romances for voice and piano, Op. 6, in late 1869. The last of these songs is the melancholy None But The Lonely Heart, a tender, expressive, and delicate song, easy to learn and sing. This arrangement can be sung by any combinationof voices, TB, SA, SATB, male or female, duet, quartet, chorus, and so on. The English lyrics are not a literal translation of the Russian, but capture the emotions of sadness, longing, and being parted from loved ones. The unison voices divide at measure 38, where the song begins the climb to its climax. Ten years later, when this Howard and Emerson tune was published, those cylinders were referred to as records, and Arthur Collins made the first recording of Hello! Ma Baby. The lyrics tell the tale of a guy who has a girlfriend he knows only through the telephone. This was one of the first songs to deal with the telephone (that medium, too, being still pretty new). The chorus was kicked back into the spotlight in 1955 when a certain movie frog sang and danced his way across a Warner Brothers cartoon background. The current version used the 1899 sheet music as its source, but is a completely original arrangement that enhances the ragtime feel of the music. This is an infectious piece that is fun to play and a toe-tapper for the audience. Completed in 2016, this arrangement’s performance time runs about 3 minutes, 20 seconds.
