Euphonium Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1009011

Composed by Johann Strauss Jr. Arranged by Rob Baltus. Romantic Period. Individual part. 13 pages. Rob Baltus #6209215. Published by Rob Baltus (A0.1009011).

Vergnügungszug (Pleasure Train) op. 281 is a polka composed by Johann Strauss II in 1864. It was written for the Association of Industrial Societies' Ball held in the Redoutensaal on 19 January 1864 and was inspired by the opening of the Austrian Southern Railway – the Südbahn – which operated many 'pleasure trains' offering trips from Vienna to the countryside. Johann Strauss II's vividly descriptive polka, however, is remarkable for its use of horns to suggest the chuffing of the train. In the trio section the melody constantly hints of the train's progression. The polka, like the train's journey, has to end, however, and Strauss powers home the conclusion with high chords before a resounding flourish.

A train is chugging into a tunnel where the water drips down
Makes a sound like diu diu diu
A sound like a coin when it's flipped up and drops to the floor

The Fulong Old Caoling Railway Tunnel was opened in 1924 at a length of 2,167 meters (1.34 miles). Because of the tropical climate of Taiwan, the condensation from the ceiling of the tunnel frequently dripped onto the roofs of the trains as they passed through. This folk song is about the drip-drop (“diu diuâ€) sound that the passengers used to hear as they rode the old locomotives on their journeys to the seaside. The tunnel is now part of the network of Taiwanese cycle paths.

Test Drive from How to Train Your Dragon

Composers John James Powell and Michael John Mollo wrote this soaring piece for the soundtrack from the movie How To Train Your Dragon. You know the moment when Hiccup is training his new dragon Toothless and they go soaring through the skies for the first time--this is the melody that plays in the background!

I wrote this arrangement for one of my students, Nicole D. Whenever we are searching for recital pieces or fun music to learn, we usually turn to animated movies. (Maybe because I have been told by some of my students that my taste in music is old--but I got tired of getting blank stares when I suggest some titles of the music I listen to!) At least we can connect on film music--especially animated film music! Nicole is the one that suggested this song--I had watched the movie a couple of times, but never really listened closely to the soundtrack, except to know that I liked it.

She was my guinea pig while I was arranging the song and I am thankful for her feedback and suggestions for different parts of the music.

This piece is ideal as a recital piece or as a fun piece to learn and perform (maybe a summer project!). The piece is arranged for Early Intermediate players and will challenge them with fingering passages, chord accompaniment that requires a stretch of an octave, and expressive playing.

This book is written for students who are in grade 1 to grade 3.
The exercises in this book start from easy ones like single-hand exercises and exercises in 5-finger positions to normal and more difficult both-hands exercises. The aim of this book is to train students’ ability to read the score of a particular key signature precisely. As learning a new key signature needs time, the exercises in this book give students more than enough chances to familiarize themselves with a particular key signature.
The exercises in this book are mostly short so that students can play them with ease and have stronger feeling of success. When they can read the score more fluently, they will be more confident and interested to play more.
Enjoy the process and your abilities will be strengthened!

Composed by Juan María Solare. 19th Century,20th Century,21st Century,Classical,Instructional. Score and Parts. 20 pages. Juan Maria Solare #820190. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.1224099).

Orchestraining is a cycle of orchestral studies, each of which focuses on different aspects of performance. These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance.

In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.

I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap.

The particular study Orchestraining Nr. 01 focuses on the subject of simultaneous attacks, presenting a series of staccato chords in different parts of the bar. The piece will be played twice, with different dynamics and (partly) different performing techniques (particularly in the strings: pizzicato vs. arco).

Orchestraining No. 01 - simultaneous attacks

*

Entrainment (2009)

Written for New Noise

Oboe & Percussion

Entrainment is the process by which two oscillating systems, which have different periods when they function independently, assume the same period when interacting. The principle of entrainment is universal, appearing in chemistry, pharmacology, biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, astronomy, architecture to name but a few.

This piece explores the entrainment of tempo with two initially diverse tempo structures synchronising after a period of four minutes. At the start of the score the oboe begins at 137 bpm and the percussionist at 63 bpm. Over the course of the four minutes the percussionist speeds up whilst the oboist slows down resulting in the tempi synchronising at four minutes. After four minutes the two instruments begin a discourse in unison (rhythmically, melodically, and dynamically): the musical equivalent of total synchronisation. In the final section of the piece the parts diverge with the percussionist slowing down and the oboe part maintaining its speed.

As with many of my pieces, the starting point for Entrainment was an external source, in this case the song Time by Pink Floyd. The rhythmic lines throughout Entrainment are based on the rhythm to the bass line of the first part of Time. This can be clearly seen in the opening in which the oboe part employs this rhythm.

Harmonically Entrainment consists of a series of key centres whose period is determined by points within the four minutes where either of the two independent parts briefly synchronise at the semiquaver level with the unit of a second. At each of these points (which become more frequent as the piece progresses), the harmonic centre changes. The harmonic centres relate directly to the chord structure of Pink Floyd's Time: at each point where either part synchronises with seconds the harmonic centre in both parts moves one chord through Time's chord sequence. At 2' 19'' the percussion and oboe part synchronise (albeit briefly) for the first time. This event was used to mark the start of more polytonal harmony as both instruments from this point forward begin their own cycles through the Time chords. Throughout the piece, points of synchronisation are highlighted musically.

Performance
mp3 recordings that contain a dual click track for the first four minutes of the piece can be obtained by contacting guybunce@hotmail.com. The click track is arranged so that the oboe click is on the left channel and the percussion click is on the right. An alternative click track (track 3) is also provided using a different sound (a beep).

The performers should wear the headphone in one ear which corresponds to the track of their part. The dual click track can then be played on a single CD player (or mp3 player) with the output going to both sets of headphones using a headphone splitter or other device. Alternatively, files can be put on either two iPods or Mp3 players. The players will then have to synchronize the beginnings of each track.

It is possible to play the piece without the use of the click track(s). If this is the case, performers should use the metronome markings and general layout of the score to aid performance. It is advisable that one player (possibly the oboist) sets the tempo and tempo changes, and the other player follows.

It was not always possible to represent accurately the relationship between the two parts in the score. Arrows have been added on the score to show points of synchronisation where the score layout differs.

Composed by Jan Roh. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian,Easter,Sacred. Score and parts. 17 pages. Con Spirito Music #5374805. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726098).

Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain is a resurrection hymn-text authored by the Byzantine priest, theologian, and poet, St. John of Damascus (c. 675-754). He is counted among the Fathers of the Eastern Orthodox Church and is regarded by the Roman Catholic Church as one the Doctors of the Church. The English translation of the hymn was completed by the Anglican priest, scholar, and hymn-writer John Mason Neale (1818-1866) and published in his Hymns of the Eastern Church (1862).

Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain is typically sung to either of two hymn tunes: ST. KEVIN, by the English composer Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), and GAUDEAMUS PARITER, by the Bohemian bishop, hymn writer and composer Jan Roh (c. 1487-1547).

The latter tune is the basis for this arrangement. With introductory and concluding fanfares, exposition of the tune in various instrumental combinations and harmonizations, and rich, powerful sonorities throughout, it is ideal as a prelude or postlude to Easter worship, or for use at any time.
