♫ presentation © 2023 Stephen R Dalrymple

♫ After the victory of Yahweh over Ba’al at Mount Carmel, Elijah and the people executed the 450 prophets of Ba’al. For the first time in 3 years, Elijah prays for rain. In the following rainstorm, Elijah outruns Ahab’s chariot returning to Samaria. But the next morning it seems as if nothing has happened. Jezebel still has her 400 prophets. She sends a message to Elijah that he will be killed.

♫ Elijah is discouraged and defeated. Did Mt Carmel really mean nothing? He runs for the wilderness, complaining to God. He is so disheartened that he asks God to take his life. He makes a pilgrimage to Mt Horeb where Moses received the Law, fasting for 40 days, still complaining. He yearns for God to answer him. As at Mt Carmel, God had demonstrated His power at Sinai with thunderstorm and lightning. Elijah is evidently expecting large dramatic gestures for God to reveal Himself. But now God will teach Elijah that He also acts in ordinary, quiet ways, as will his continued ministry

♫ 8 Themes were used to create this movement: 1. Ahab (based on Movement 2, theme 3) 2. Jezebel (based on Movement 2 Theme 4 – Atonal) 3. Elijah's Excuses (based on Movement 2 Theme 2 in Dorian Mode) 4. Elijah's Depression (Based on Movement 2 Theme 2 in Dorian Mode) 5. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (based on Movement 1 Theme 1 in Aeolian Mode) 6. Windstorm (Modified Dorian Mode) 7. Earthquake (tritones and clusters) 8. God's Voice - Polytonal (A minor / G major)

♫ The score shows the parts for violin and piano, but individual parts are provided for the other solo instruments. The flute is featured on the audio and YouTube presentations here.

By Keith Terrett. By Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Instructional,Romantic Period. 9 pages. Keith Terrett #1012118. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1431642).

Transcribed for String Orchestra the second movement of the New World Symphony is introduced by a harmonic progression of chords in the wind instruments. Beckerman interprets these chords as a musical rendition of the narrative formula Once upon a time. Then a solo cor anglais (English horn) plays the famous main theme in D-flat major accompanied by muted strings. Dvo?ák was said to have changed the theme from clarinet to cor anglais as it reminded him of the voice of Harry Burleigh. The movement's middle section contains a passage in C? minor evoking a nostalgic and desolate mood which eventually leads into a funeral march above pizzicato steps in the basses. It is followed by a quasi-scherzo that incorporates this movement's theme as well as the first movement's main and closing themes. The Largo is concluded with the soft return of the main theme and introductory chords.

JS Bach, 15 Sinfonias  (3 part Inventions)

Originally for keyboard alone. This transcription separates the 3 voices, so that the bottom two can be played on a keyboard instrument while a treble instrument plays the top.

The original has been transcribed for a piano to accompany a treble instrument like flute, violin, oboe, etc. The piano score has the second voice on treble and the third voice on the bass clef of the grand staff. The flute part is in a smaller size staff above the piano grand staff.

A companion book for the flute, or other treble instrument, is also available. In addition, an audio cd has been made where the flute is in the right channel, and the piano accompaniment in the left channel. This cd is useful as a practice tool to let either player practice with a recording.. You can download the 16 tracks at https://app.box.com/s/wg2vyo7yg4imchnb7zaihk0e3fs1nqaw

The user can use panning to either hear both parts, or only the other player’s part as he practices.

All are in the original key. Violins and clarinets can play Sinfonia 15 in the original key of B minor, but the flute range doesn’t go low enough. So Sinfonia 15 has an additional version transposed to E minor so that a flute can play the low notes of the melody line without jumping octaves.  Saxophones and other instruments can play the flute part without transposing if the accompanist has an electronic keyboard. to transpose the piano part.

These pieces are a nice addition to the flute or violin literature as study, encore, or concert pieces.

Brass Trio: 2 Trumpets in C, 1 Bass Trombone. Duration: ca. 12:20, Score: 37 pages

J.S. Bach's Trio Sonatas BWV 525-530 are some of the most popular and beloved works of the Baroque period. Composed in 1717, these six trio sonatas for the organ are among Bach's earliest works for the instrument. They are all in the traditional three-movement form and are composed in the style of the Italian concerto grosso, with two upper voices (treble and alto) and a basso continuo. The two upper voices often intertwine in intricate contrapuntal melodies, while the basso continuo provides harmonic support. The works are also full of virtuosic passages that demonstrate Bach's mastery of the organ. The Trio Sonatas are considered to be among the most important and influential works of the Baroque era, and they continue to be widely performed and studied today.

The Bach Trio Sonatas have been successfully transcribed for a variety of ensembles, including wind, string, and brass ensembles. The parts are easily divided among a variety of wind instruments, including flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone. In these transcriptions, the original material is retained, but often with some additional orchestration or embellishment. These transcriptions often emphasize the polyphonic texture of the original works, creating a rich soundscape.  The Sonatas have also been successfully adapted for a variety of string ensembles. In these versions, the original two-part texture with the basso is maintained, creating a full and satisfying sound that allows for a more nuanced interpretation of the works. In addition, these transcriptions often add a variety of dynamic markings and articulations that were not present in the original editions. These transcriptions provide performers with a variety of options for interpreting and performing these beloved works.
