As I composed similar works, I realized that, although I have used the concepts of sonata form in various movements, because these pieces reflect the drama of selected passages of the Bible, Tone Poem was a more fitting genre title. I have begun the process of transcribing these Tone Poems for additional instruments.   I consider these Tone Poems as contemporary classical music. I have used modal harmonies; polychords and polytonality; free dissonance; atonality, mixed meters, etc. to convey the drama of the Bible.   Sketches of Christ is based on 3 episodes from Christ’s Life: The calming of the Sea of Galilee, Mary and Martha, and the healing of the man born blind.    This score is movement 3 of a 3 movement tone poem, originally scored and premiered as a sonata for Cello and Violin. It is presented here for 5 additional solo instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or Trombone) and Violin.  â€ƒSketches of Christ is written in 20th Century Classical Music composition techniques. Various movements employ a mix of bitonality, modal harmony, deliberate dissonance, and mixed meter. Each movement dramatizes an event form the Life of Christ. He was a contemporary of Tomaso Albinoni. He held concerts in his hometown and also composed and published several sets of concertos, including six concertos under the title of La Cetra (The Lyre), as well as cantatas, arias, canzonets, and violin sonatas. Marcello, being a slightly older contemporary of Antonio Vivaldi, often composed under the pseudonym Eterio Stinfalico, his name as a member of the celebrated Arcadian Academy (Pontificia Accademia degli Arcadi). He died in Padua in 1747.Alessandro's brother was the more well-known Benedetto Marcello, also a composer.Although most of his works are infrequently performed today, Marcello is regarded as a very competent composer. His La Cetra concertos are unusual for their wind solo parts, concision and use of counterpoint within a broadly Vivaldian style, according to Grove, placing them as a last outpost of the classic Venetian Baroque concerto.[citation needed]The Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D minor op. 1, S D935, is an early 18th-century concerto for oboe, strings and continuo. Perhaps his best-known work. Its worth was affirmed by Johann Sebastian Bach who transcribed it for harpsichord (BWV 974). The northern 10 tribes, once faithful to Yahweh were virtually pagan. The prophetic ministries of Elijah and Elisha were used by God to produce a cluster of miracles that had a special purpose in the life of the nation. ♫ Besides the golden calves made by Jeroboam, the Israelites worshiped Ba’al, the supposed god of thunderstorms and fertility. The worship of Ba’al and his consort Asherah became popular, (not surprising since their representations were pornographic and the temples employed prostitutes of both genders and homosexuals for the use of worshippers.) The miracles of Elijah (involving drought and famine, flour, rain, and lightning mark a contest between Ba’al and Yahweh to show who really controls the seasons, the weather and harvests.♫ The movement is made of 4 themes: 1. For the first time in 3 years, Elijah prays for rain. In the following rainstorm, Elijah outruns Ahab’s chariot returning to Samaria. But the next morning it seems as if nothing has happened. Jezebel still has her 400 prophets. She sends a message to Elijah that he will be killed.♫ Elijah is discouraged and defeated. Did Mt Carmel really mean nothing? He runs for the wilderness, complaining to God. He is so disheartened that he asks God to take his life. He makes a pilgrimage to Mt Horeb where Moses received the Law, fasting for 40 days, still complaining. He yearns for God to answer him. As at Mt Carmel, God had demonstrated His power at Sinai with thunderstorm and lightning. Elijah is evidently expecting large dramatic gestures for God to reveal Himself. They even cut themselves to add human blood to the animal sacrifice. At twilight, Elijah rebuilt the altar of God, prepared the sacrifice and prayed. Fire from heaven (lightning) not only struck the altar but consumed it completely and evaporated the water that had drenched it. The people fell on their faces and declared “Yahweh is God! ♫ This movement is based on four themes: 1. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Lydian Mode) 2. Elijah (Dorian Mode) 3. Ahab (Mixolydian) 4. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. This is the largest song so far. It is very complex and was originally composed as a Soprano solo with a 9-part 'orchestra' split into three unequally sized 'choirs'. Choir 1 consisted of two cittarones (a kind of theorbo or archlute), a clavicembalo (early harpsichord) and a spinet. Choir 2 comprised a string orchestra (viole da brazza, violins, viole da braccia, clavicembano (sic) and basso continuo). Choir 3 comprised individual instruments viola da braccio or gamba, basso da braccio or gamba, contrabass and an (unnamed) keyboard. As you might imagine, this was well nigh impossible to reduce to 5 players, so I have transcribed it for 9 brass instruments, more or less keeping to the original 'choir' groupings with a trumpet/cornet solo line. This is also one of the longest songs so far. I hope you enjoy the result. The text translates as: How softly, scented lips, I kiss you or listen to you. The poet is describing his inability to both kiss and hear his beloved's voice at the same time. The following parts are supplied: Part 1 in Bb (Solo) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 2 in Bb (Tutti 1) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 3 in C/Bb (Basso) - Euphonium/Trombone/Baritone Part 4 in Bb (Tutti 2) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 5 in Bb (Tutti 3) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 6 in F/Eb - Horn Part 7 in F/Eb - Horn Part 8 in C/Bb - Trombone/Euphonium/Baritone Part 9 in C/Bb - Trombone/Euphonium/Baritone Part 10 in C/Eb - Tuba/Eb Bass The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.
