Friedrich von Flotow is best known for his opera Martha which has many memorable melodies. Sadly Rübezahl (literally Turnip Counter bu refers to a mythical giant) is largely neglected, but contains many lyrical and rhythmical themes.
This arrangement works really well for Concert Band; giving all instruments something to enjoy.

Sadly and unjustly neglected over the years, this excellent piece contains some lovely themes which are complemented by bold harmonic progressions, all in a truly romantic style.
Raff works were regularly played during his lifetime and much admired by his contemporaries, but have dropped out of fashion. Let's hope that this can help to bring them back to public notice.

This opening extract from Verdi's Ernani is a suitably dramatic and energetic piece for chorus and orchestra. It will fit into an opening section of an opera fiesta, while being less known than many others.
While Ernani is not well known these days, it was first performed on 9 March 1844, and it was immensely popular, and was revived countless times during its early years. It became Verdi's most popular opera until it was superseded by Il trovatore after 1853. In 1904, it became the first opera to be recorded completely.

Gustav Laska was a Czech bass player and composer of some note in his lifetime, being one of the school of Czech double bass playing inspired by the great Franz Simandl.
These Five Pieces were originally written for Cello and Piano, but transcribe well for the double bass after a careful choice of keys. They add to a rather restricted range of repertoire for this instrument.

The introduction to Lehar's lesser known operetta The Little Prince works well as a stand-alone work (with the addition of a bar at the end to close it). There is plenty of variety in the piece, despite its relatively short length.
It has plenty of interest for all players in the band, although the key makes the Tenor and Baritone Sax parts a bit challenging.

Heinrich Domnich (1767 - 1844) was an accoomplished horn player, teacher, composer and author of an instruction book, his Méthode de Premier et de Second Cor.

This piece demonstrates a complete understanding of the possibilities for the instruments and performers of the time. It is both lively in the two outside movements and dramatic in the middle one. The orchestral writing is delightful and varied and the piece deserves to be performed regularly in the future.

A terrific overture by the Danish composer Frederic (or Friedrich) Kuhlau. He is best known for his piano works, but his orchestral compositions are inventive and beautifully crafted.

A relatively unknown, but glorious piece by this underplayed composer. Best known for his opera The Vampire, his music is very much in the romantic style and quite similar, in some ways, to Weber. It transcribes very nicely for Concert Band, giving everyone opportunities to enjoy themselves.
