It is about 6 minutes in length and probably used as music for the theatre. The Chancony or Chaconne has been arranged for 8-part Trombone Ensemble in two choirs by Ralph Sauer for moderately advanced performers. The work uses a repeated ground bass line in 3/4 meter and could have easily been called a Passacaglia by the composer.

This arrangement keeps all of the intensity and excitement of the original composition and is suitable for high school and college students. This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available to the public for the first time. The Coronation March was ordered by the city of Moscow for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III in 1883. It was written during March of 1883 and was performed for the first time on June 4, 1883 in Sokolniky Park in Moscow, conducted by Sergei Taneyev. The music then included excerpts of the anthem, God Save the Tsar. The American premiere was on May 5, 1891, for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City, conducted by Tchaikovsky himself. During the Soviet Era, Russian performances and recordings of the music were revised to omit the excerpts from the Czarist national anthem, replacing it with thematic material used earlier in the march, due to an official Soviet ban on the anthem. Starting with Dmitri Medvedev's inauguration in 2008, an abbreviated version of this piece is played during the Russian presidential inauguration accompanying the entrance of the incoming president, and ends well before the playing in this piece of the Tsarist anthem God Save the Tsar. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, the Coronation March does not have an opus number. It has been given alternative catalogue designations TH 50 and CW 47. Tchaikovsky's Coronation March was originally scored for a full orchestra and written in the key of D Major. Completed in 1900, shortly after he abruptly left the Royal College of Music, the composition is dedicated to the memory of his mother, Clara Lediard Holst, who died when he was a child.Scored here for Trombone Octet, “ Ave Maria “ is a lovely setting for a haunting rendition of a familiar theme. The arrangement has improvised blues solos and mixes it up with a Tango and Boogie Woogie section. This 4-6 minute arrangement is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

The Evening-Watch was written in 1925, when Holst lived in Thaxted, England having had to temporarily leave his teaching duties because of overwork and illness. This setting of Henry Vaughan’s ‘Dialogue between the Body and the Soul’ was too  austere for listeners of its day and it remained out of print for thirty years, until 1965. Its mood of calm strength and passionate resignation sounds as if it belongs to the 1960’s.  This beautiful arrangement for 8-part trombone choir by Ronald Baron seems altogether appropriate given the instrument’s vocal character, its frequent use for music at funerals and Holst’s other musical passion; his short career as a trombonist. The 4 minute piece is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Jim Hopson's Futility in Seven Positions for Trombone Ensemble and Narrator is a pithy work of about 4 minutes for advanced performers. It is comprised of four movements: 1. Way of the Blade, a Presto movement with lots of glisses that runs headlong into a quote from the Tommy Dorsey signature melody. 2. Book Learnin' a sarcastic rant on the rigidity of school homework. 3. Courting Disaster a great joke told by the narrator over a rhythmic bass line. 4. Disco featuring the Tuba Mirum solo over a groovin' Disco line. All the above is just fun and games tongue firmly planted in cheek including a final gasp quoting Ravel's Bolero.
