Then this famous and elegant three-movement, mini-concerto for trumpeters from Johann Ernst Altenburg’s extensive 1795 treatise Essay on an introduction to the heroic and musical trumpeters’ and kettledrummers’ art is a rewarding experience for trumpeters to expand their musical horizons. Composed for 18th century court trumpeters with valveless instruments, the work is scored for solo trumpet with two antiphonal trios and timpani. Each movement presents contrasting musical styles, the first fanfare figures, the second expressive lyricism, and the third facile scale runs. Two complete editions for B-flat trumpets are included, each with full score and parts, one in A-flat concert for more advanced players and a second in F concert to make it more accessible for less experienced trumpeters. About the Composer

The 'Atalanta, HWV 35: Ouverture' was composed by the renowned Baroque composer, Georg Friedrich Händel. His imaginative works make him one of the most important figures of the Baroque period. Other well-known works of Handel's include 'The Messiah', 'Water Music', and 'Music for the Royal Fireworks'. He was a master at combining various instruments and emotional elements to create enthralling music.

Musical Characteristics

The 'Atalanta, HWV 35: Ouverture' is characterized as a light and airy composition, made up of a combination of a trumpet solo and chamber orchestra. To the winners, she offers a prize of marriage. As we listen to Handel's composition, we can imagine the race beginning with the slow and steady 'Largo', as Atalanta calmly assesses the present, and takes her time to decide her path. As the 'Allegro' begins, we can feel her strength and power as she embarks on her journey, full of excitement and determination. As the piece builds, we can feel her courage and enthusiasm as she confronts the race ahead. Finally, we can picture Atalanta achieving success as the piece ends in jubilation.

This arrangement of the traditional spiritual When the Saints Go Marching In is presented here as a mixed level duet for two pianos, four hands. The PIANO 1 is the easier part (early-intermediate) and the PIANO 2 is slightly more challenging, though still only at the intermediate level. Both PIANO parts carry the melody at times beginning with PIANO 1 for the verse. Quick-paced and bright, this dual piano duet is an ideal selection for a church setting.

The purchase price includes a 5-page score with combined PIANO 1 and PIANO 2 parts on each page (the grand staff) plus an alternate format with the PIANO 1 and PIANO 2 parts on separate pages (3 pages each). Whoa, this is the next Hunting Wabbits chart in the trilogy. As recorded by the Big Phat Band on the Goodwin CD That's How We Roll, this HW3 is fairly challenging, but well worth the effort. There are parts for soprano sax lead (alternate alto 1) and 2nd alto with piccolo (alternate 2nd alto sax-only) and solo space for soprano (alto), alto, tenor 1, trumpet 4, and trombone 1. Lead trumpet range is to written high F-sharp. This title is available in SmartMusic.
