Soon after I began realizing that concerti written with tuba-euphonium quartet as the supporting ensemble were extremely rare (and possibly non-existent). Ideal for soloists visiting schools with resident quartets this piece is an attempt to fill a gap in the literature. It is also ideal for larger ensembles.Each movement is connected by manipulations of the motive F, A-flat, and B-flat. Of the plethora of options the relationships between these notes presented I used the minor third and the upper or lower neighbor tones the most frequently, whether it be hidden inside the themes or outlining the work’s largest structures.- Matthew NunesWindsor, September 2015.

His main living was as an organist and choirmaster, however Wanhal's musical output as a composer includes over a dozen concerti, many symphonies, chamber music, operas and much sacred music including 58 masses. Wanhal is rumored to have played chamber music with Mozart, Haydn and Dittersdorf, with Wanhal on the cello. In the 1770's Wanhal met the contrabassist Johannes Matthias Sperger and wrote a double bass concerto for him. The Concerto is in the key of E-Flat (original key of D for the double bass) in three movements and has been expertly arranged for Tuba and Piano by Ms. Janet Yarbrough of Duke University.This work is available for solo Tuba with Wind Ensemble.

It sounds very reminiscent of the writing of Ewald and Maurer, so it has the potential to serve much as those do for the quintet rep. The work is 4 movements and lasts about 13 minutes with breaks between movements.

Can be used in professional and academic recitals, didactic material and repertoire for ensemble practice. Boccherini was born in Lucca, Italy, and became a cello virtuoso. He moved to Spain, where he worked with the Spanish royal family. The third movement of the quintet, minuet and trio, is famous and often played as an independent piece. The work is beautiful and has good partial writing for all instruments, with melodies and rhythms typical of Boccherini. Suitable for concerts and home performances.

Grainger wrote in his manuscript: “John Bowlin' was a foreman at a farm at Horkstow, and John Steeleye Span was waggoner under him. They fell out, and J.S. Span made these verses.�.

Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755334). I. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The interpretation of this adage is that one always wants what someone else has instead of accepting one’s own uniqueness. During the movement, counterpoint is used to depict one instrument copying another. Towards the middle of the movement, tuba 2 eventually realizes its independence and states a bold melody of its own. The movement ends with the euphonium 1 playing its melody alone with pauses between the phrases as if looking over its shoulder wondering where the other musicians are. II. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. This setting represents a growing love despite the emptiness of being apart. Hollow intervals of fourths and fifths representing longing, occur at the beginning and end. A short love duet between two instruments occurs in the middle. III. Time flies when you are having fun. A rollicking six-eight meter is used to represent a children’s game of tag. There is a lot of alternation of short phrases as if one instrument is trying to tag the other and the other is trying to avoid being tagged. The dissonance and short accented notes represent taunting. IV. Every cloud has a silver lining. This movement is a prayer-like setting with alternation of minor and major harmonies representing the cloud and the silver lining respectively. V. He who hesitates is lost. This movement is very rhythmic and syncopated with the instruments alternating phrases in the manner of a call and response. It calls for split-second precision between the performers, therefore representing the adage. VI. A rolling stone gathers no moss. The last movement is a perpetual motion in a rolling six-eight meter. The musical ideas are very chromatic with the exception of main theme that appears first as a solo melody, then as several instruments together, and later as instruments in imitation. Towards the end, there are a few brief pauses and low accented notes as a life of activity has a few bumps along the way.
