The soundtrack for the new film was written by Simon Franglen, who originally wrote 5 hours of music to cover any and all situations in the almost 3-hour movie. The Songcord is a beautiful song that is heard twice in the film – at the beginning and at the end. A songcord is a mnemonic device used by the Na’vi that assists them in storytelling. In this song, Neytiri is thanking Eywa – the Great Mother - for her family. This arrangement is scored for flute quartet - 4 C or 3 C and alto. An optional part of this piece is what helps create the mood, which is the part called “Shimmer�. In an interview, Simon Franglen said that an important part of the music is the feeling of light, and he achieved that by including shimmering sounds into his tunes. The “Shimmer� part can be played by hanging a few keys (house keys, car keys, etc.) that have different pitches on short lengths of string. Use a small metal or wooden object to lightly hit the keys to create little “dings�.  You can also use wind chimes, a little xylophone, bells, etc.  The idea is to create a magical mood without overpowering the music.  Play this part wherever there is a note in the measure. Duration: 3.75 minutes.

The weather was magnificent in May. Our friends Seph and Roger met us there. Being long-time veterans of Paris, they took us all over the city: Le Marais, the Left Bank, Montmartre, Sacré Coeur, Père LaChaise cemetery, Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Jardin du Luxembourg, Jardin des Tuileries, Notre Dame cathedral, Eiffel Tower, the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt, the canal at Saint Martin, etc. Since the weather was so great we basically stayed outside the entire two weeks. My wife Kris said that we had to return next again to Paris to go inside the museums. So we did. The weather in Paris after Christmas was very damp and chilly. So we did indoor activities: Le Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, Palais Garnier, etc. We even attended a beautiful performance of Swan Lake by the Paris Opera Ballet at L’Opéra Bastille. I should also mention that on both occasions I met up with a former student of mine from Berklee, Joe Makholm. He makes a living in Paris playing jazz piano. Joe got us a gig at the Swan Bar in Montparnasse. On the first occasion we did it as a trio with a French bass player. I played flute. On the second occasion, we did it as a duo. Playing jazz in Paris? You can’t beat that!!! Early this year, Steven Lipsitt and I had a chat about my writing a new work for the Boston Classical Orchestra. My last work for the BCO was a piano concerto with Robert Levin as soloist. I told Steven that this time I wanted to write a symphony. He said, Sure. Go ahead. I told him it would be about Paris. He said he would put Mozart’s Paris Symphony on the same program. I said, Fabulous! Symphony No. 8 … City of Light (2011) is in five movements. 1. La Seine Presto, Moderato 2. Twice Mr. Hay sent notice to the staff of Oprah yet never received acknowledgment from them. The attached audio file is voiced by the computer as an oboe. The attached YouTube link is a practice session by the composer outside his hand-built cabin in the mountains of Washington state where he lived for three years. It is played on a Ganassi style Alto-in-G recorder handcrafted by Bodil Diesen of Norway. Please note that due to brain damage the composer is no longer able to differentiate fingering and notes to play instruments in their correct pitch ranges, so this is played on a G pitched instrument but music is read as C fingered (Soprano and Tenor). As solo music it makes no difference but an Alto player will probably notice the pitches don't match the fingerings they are seeing. The sound file is voiced in piano but this is a great piece for treble instrument; i.e. Oboe, Clarinet, Flute, or the Recorder family.

Catalan folk songs have a quality quite unlike anything else, and certainly nothing like the music we so readily associate with Spain - 'Flamenco' and 'Cante jondo'. The most famous of these is the achingly beautiful and utterly haunting El Cant dels ocells (Song of the Birds), made famous by the great Catalan cellist, Pablo Casals, and set (twice!) by Joaquin Nin, as well as an exquisite solo guitar version by Federic Mompou. All have this haunting and ethereal quality. These songs are well-known as solo guitar works by Miguel Llobet (1878-1938, Barcelona) in his celebrated 16 Folksong Settings, made famous by Segovia, and much-loved by generations of guitarists.

My arrangement includes one or two little bits of Mark Knopfler’s quasi-improvised variations on the tune. There are no dynamics, but the changing texture of the accompaniment creates the illusion of dynamic changes and you are welcome to add phrasing and dynamics to make the performance “yours�.The guitar part is a little challenging at speed but this will suit confident intermediate players.This enjoyable concert item has a wonderfully captivating melody that the audience will be humming all the way home...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts.
