Soul Finger is the first single released by R&B group the Bar-Kays. It was issued by Stax Records on the Volt Records label on April 14, 1967. Soul Finger was a hit in the United States, peaking at number 3 on the U.S. Billboard R&B singles chart and number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. Dan Aykroyd had covered Soul Finger with John Belushi and their band, the Blues Brothers, on their album Made in America.

Originally derived from a Ukranian folk tune, Mykola Leontovich composed Shchedryk for choir in 1916. It depicts a swallow arriving to tell the household of the arrival of spring and good fortune for the next year. The original folk song was often sung as a well-wishing song at the new year (January 13th on the Julian calendar). The song is often referred to as the Ukranian Bell Carol. After the song was performed in the United States in 1921, a prominent choir director wrote new lyrics that reflected a Christmas scene, inspired by the bell-like tones in the song. This version has remained popular in the U.S.

My hope is that this book provides a joyful way to strengthen reading skills and helps young musicians enjoy interacting with printed music. The tune was written on a single scrap of paper by Bilk and handed over to Leon Young (1916-1991) who crafted the string arrangement, including the characteristic harmonic shifts at the very end. In May 1969, the crew of Apollo 10 took Stranger on the Shore on their mission to the moon. Gene Cernan, a member of the crew, included the tune on a cassette tape used in the command module of the Apollo spacecraft. On 26 May 1962, Stranger on the Shore became the first British recording to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
