Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This gives the music a mysterious and mystical quality, making this a very different version to Kirkpatrick's famous setting. The rocking back and forth of the two harmonies (with a striding bass line below) mimics the movement of Christ's crib. Each verse is texturally varied to maintain development and interest throughout.
