I love our new place, but it seems really strange to see Christmas decorations going up in December and green everywhere!! I thought I would get in the mood for holiday celebrations by sitting down and playing old Christmas favourites. Silent Night is one of those beautiful carols where the peace and spirit of the season just settle in your heart. As I sat and played, the arrangement formed itself in my mind and in my fingers. I worked backwards on this arrangement--normally I sit down with an outline of the music in mind and work from there. This time, I played the arrangement (luckily I was recording!) and then transcribed my own arrangement. It was a new and interesting way to work and fun to dive into my mind and finger wanderings! This arrangement explores some different harmonies in the intro and the outro. The verse and chorus are repeated four times in this arrangement. The first time sticks pretty close to the original, with some suspensions and interesting rhythms thrown in to keep it interesting. The second repetition introduces several countermelodies and different right hand harmonies. The third repetition is a sweet melody in the treble register of the piano. The fourth repetition is an improvisation based on the harmonic structure of the verse and chorus. I hope you enjoy this arrangement. When using the intervals of a 4th and a tritone as material for a non-jazz piece, one has to be careful not to make the music sound like jazz, as this particular interval set comprises the essential dominant chord voicing for most jazz pianists. G-C#-F#, for instance, as a representation of A13 or A7. So, this piece uses complete symmetry, mirroring and topographically equivalent fingerings throughout, so as to avoid this problem. Admittedly, the spellings are not easy to decipher. They often use the flatted form of a note in one clef, and the sharped form of that same musical alphabet letter in the other. This is to avoid endless naturals, as the half-step motion, so typical of movement between 4ths and tritones, necessitates. Arpeggiated figures, block chords, and even some delicious chimes at the close make this piece more than a mere display of intervallic and pianistic options. It has a feeling all its own, as the sequential chromatic meandering up from the lower end of the keyboard to the upper shows each color in turn, all the while keeping to the strict rules that these etudes were constructed under.This is the last of the groups of two interval pieces. This interpretation works for virtually any context, but is especially advantageous in an educational context.The dembow rhythm is prominent throughout the piece, and can serve as an effective introduction for the classically trained musician to interpretation and improvisational approaches of existing music.

All of the pieces were loosely based on a folk song or a popular theme from a classical composer. One of them was based on a popular folk Russian polka, so he called it Polka Russe.I have taken Polka Russe and freely arranged it for Instrumental Trio, using some of Czerny's themes, re-arranging them into parts, and also re-ordering them into my own Rondo. Form is Intro-ABACADA-Coda. I have broken up his melodies and spread them across all three parts; each part is of equal importance and each part independently adds to the stunning melodic weaving. Parts are mostly scales and arpeggios. It requires careful counting and close attention to rhythmic interplay, but sounds quite advanced and dramatic when all details are observed.    This piece is really quite Easy, I have just marked it Early Intermediate because of the Allegretto vivace tempo, the note range (two octaves), and the necessary counting. A fun piece to show your technique and musicianship as a group in any concert.  1:45 minutes, 8 pages score, 3 pages @ part

The calm and simplistic opening to this piece gives it its charm, as the close harmonies open up to give any competent group an excercise in restraint. In addition, one of the most difficult things in music is to place staccato notes right on the beat, together, at a slow tempo! A good example of this is 'L'il Darlin' by Basie/Hefti, lots of bands have trouble with the 2 staccato crotchets in the main tune, placing them just so is tricky! Now, this is certainly not jazz, but the principle is the same. Dr.B.R.Papperitz was professor of harmony at the Leipzig Conservetoire from 1851-1868 and was a major influence on the composers of his time, other than that I know very little!
