The first adventure was a kayaking trip on the Charles River in Boston, MA and the second was a tubing trip on the Huron River in Ann Arbor, MI. While lazily floating down these rivers with my friends, I imagined us with our instruments, laughing and playing. It is a joyful image that sticks with me to this day, however, I invite you to imagine your own fantasy while listening to this piece! A slightly different version of this piece premiered on May 25th, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Herndon, VA. This was one of two original compositions that I performed for my senior recital in high school. Harald Genzmer has done a lot for the work with young musicians, and many a string player can recall school orchestra days when Sinfonietta was on the programme quite often. But the probably best-known pupil of Hindemith has written far more of such educational music: all in all, 3 sinfoniettas, apart from collections of simple settings like the eleven Character Pieces for String Orchestra from 1998. They are expressive, entirely songlike miniatures, livened up by two rousing pieces and a pizzicato setting. The pieces can either be played separately or put together into little suites and are ideally suited for school, hobby and amateur orchestras. And despite all educational intentions: It is enjoyable and lively music which is fun to play.

The Ever Changing C is an early intermediately level piano solo which highlights several techniques.  First, students will use the 8 va and 8 vb concepts, utilizing the full range of the piano throughout by crossing the hands during play.  Second, an imagination of being on the sea requires students to perform the piece with a technique which produces a sound accordingly.  Third, frequent dynamic changes mimic danger on the high seas as well as calm conditions.  Lastly, students will reinforce their ability to count in 6/8 time.  My students have enjoyed playing The Ever Changing C for many years.  They enjoy the flow of the piece as well as the challenge of the cross-overs.  I know your students will enjoy the piece as much as mine!
