This expressive new choral setting by Gerda Blok-Wilson of Emily Dickinson’s poem “Hope� offers an original melody built on the Dorian mode. It provides many opportunities for building choral skills and developing vocal literacy (phrasing, vowel placement, breath support, and the use of solfege) and a way to build harmony in beginning choirs. The piece is supported by a piano accompaniment and optional soaring C instrument. The setting can be used for classroom or concert setting.

Gerda Blok-Wilson’s new composition of Emily Dickinson’s “There Came a Wind Like a Bugle� is a lively setting for SA voices with piano accompaniment. It portrays the arrival of a powerful wind and tells of its effects on the surroundings and impending disaster it brings. The piece has an ominous, almost supernatural sense that is driving to the end.

Although the choral or duet piece would work at any time of year, it could set the tone for a Halloween concert, adding an eerie atmosphere and sense of mystery.

Gerda Blok-Wilson, a Canadian composer, conductor, and educator, is a fervent advocate for the transformative power of choral singing and its remarkable ability to inspire people with diverse abilities. Her motto reflects that belief: If you can talk, you can sing! Since 2018, Gerda has dedicated herself to compiling and editing her compositions for publication. Her portfolio ranges from musicals and choral works tailored to nurture budding choirs to advanced choral repertoire that has garnered acclaim through live performances and recordings. Gerda is artist in residence at St. Patrick’s Regional High School in Vancouver and serves as the artistic director for the Vancouver Cansing Community Choir, which she founded in 2010. She is a frequent guest rehearsal conductor, helping local choirs polish their performances. Gerda's educational background includes a Bachelor of Music, a Kodály Teaching certificate, and a Master of Education with a focus on Kodály pedagogy.

This accessible developing choral piece works as a partner song. The popular Simple Gifts, a traditional Shaker song is combined with a traditional canon. The clarinet part is optional. Written for the Vancouver Cansing Choir digital concert 2021. It would be a great addition to any concert.

The arrangement for this lively French song was written for the Prince George Bel Canto Junior Choir but has been used many times by the Vancouver Cansing Junior Choirs.  While many arrangements are too challenging for beginning singers, this one is ideal for introducing just the chorus and staying in an easy 2-part harmony while adding rhythm sticks or tongue clicking. It’s always a popular piece with my choirs and audience!!

Rise Up, O Flame composed by Gerda Blok-Wilson for SAB developing voices is based on a traditional 16th Century text. The beautiful flowing phrases in the minor mode build with a simple but effective baritone part at the end. The song was premiered by the Vancouver Cansing Youth Choirs to celebrate the 2018 Winter Olympics and is a stunning choice for any concert including Remembrance, Winter Festival and more.
