This work for oboe and piano is not at all a set of variations on a theme, because the oboe always plays, without embellishment, the same sixteen-measure sequence four times. The four first measure of the this theme are played once as an intro- duction. The piano, however, is asked to create a different atmosphere each time the theme returns, replacing the meaning of the words. It is therefore the job of the oboist to find a different way of presenting the same theme, sequence by sequence, which is not entirely the easiest thing to do!

The theme returns throughout, between episodes that are themselves variations on this tune, thus essentially making the piece monothematic. Textures are developed and the main melody is passed between instruments. One variation conveys an ironic march, almost in the manner of Shostakovich. Another variation uses the theme in a series of high register parallel triads, above a tonic pedal. Following a unison statement of the original theme by all four instruments, the brief introduction returns as a coda, to frame the work. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards, including students and the more advanced.
