COLOURS – a song collection for mezzo-soprano & pianoLargely untrained, only basically educated and living most his life as a rural worker, Neilson became known as one of Australia's finest lyric poets, who wrote much about the natural world, and the beauty in it.  His poetry is peppered with references to colours particularly of the Australian landscape, notably green, yellow and orange.  There is an art gallery named for him and an art prize in his name requires competing artists to interpret his poems in paint.. His lyricism has appealed to many composers, and in this collection setting six of his poems, I have attempted to capture both his lyricism and his “colourings�. In 2001 flute magazine Pan had an appeal from Richard Stagg for more octotonic music, and at the same time I felt there was a dearth of good story-telling music for children. My Pied Piper of Hamelin was composed for Hessle Sinfonia, who performed it twice with their principal flute, Michael Taylor as soloist and the lyricist Ann Liles narrating, under my baton. Richard Sleight was soloist in the Isle of Axholme Symphony Orchestra's later performance: two excellent players who showed off the versatility and beauty of the flute.There are characteristic themes for the children, the river, the mountain, the pied piper and the rats, variously combined.This is a shorter and simpler version for flute, viola and cello: one or two players should speak the verses, preferably one for the story and one for the Pied Piper's words.Duration: 9 minutes.

This type of composition is generally performed with different national plucked, bow and wind instruments.I enjoy drawing inspiration fromAsian mythology in my unaccompanied works and have employed the myth of the one legged dancing musician. I have combined with this imagery elements of jazz and rock and roll which I use freely throughout the work. It is a brief bravura solo work, but is says much in its brief three minutes.

It was the third and final single from his fourth studio album of the same name (1975), released on Columbia Records. Though the song briefly reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., it was a bigger hit on the magazine's Easy Listening chart, where it peaked at number four Still Crazy After All These Years begins with the singer singing that I met my old lover on the street last night. The old lover has been variously interpreted to be either Simon's ex-wife Peggy Harper, from whom he was recently divorced, his former girlfriend from the 1960s Kathy Chitty, or even Simon's former musical partner Art Garfunkel, who appears on the song that follows 'Still Crazy After All These Years on the album. After sharing a few beers, the singer and the old lover part ways again.
