In 1986, the Tennessee Dance Theater commissioned the Suite from O’Connor to be performed as a violin solo at Nashville’s Summer Lights Festival. The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological form for which O’Connor says not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own family’s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the family’s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually out West during WWl nearly 300 hundred years later. O’Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style in which he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, maybe similar to what O’Connor’s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, reveals music they must of encountered living in early America. Strings & Threads musically describes how folk music styles hundreds of years apart are interconnected - possessing a common thread, from an Irish reel to jazz. Song Of The Liberty Bell (violin solo part – violin and piano) MO130BViolin Solo Part (score available)Music by Mark O’Connor3 pages - 5:00 minutes in length Song Of The Liberty Bell adapted for violin and piano was composed by Mark O’Connor and used as the theme song for the critically acclaimed PBS documentary, Liberty! The American Revolution. O’Connor wrote the piece to include three different instrument groupings - unaccompanied solo, folk ensemble, and string orchestra. The Sony Classical album Liberty! features Song Of The Liberty Bell in all three arrangements. O’Connor later adapted his piece for violin and piano. Album notes author Thomas Fleming calls the music profoundly moving with exquisite melody. Fleming further describes the orchestral version - O’Connor joins in, and the instruments of the symphony pick up the theme. It is a musical replication of the way the voices of liberty in 1776 began with a lonely defiant few - and then swelled to a tremendous national chorus that has resounded through the world for the next two hundred and thirty-three years. The music is suited for all levels. Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts.Music editing, copying and engraving by Mark O’Connorusing Finale on Apple Macintosh 1996 Composed by Mark O’ConnorThe string orchestra version can be heard on Liberty! Brave Wolfe (violin part – trumpet and violin) MO108CViolin Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor4 pages - 7:00 minutes in length Brave Wolfe for trumpet and violin is a piece by Mark O’Connor based on an old traditional ballad. It was recorded by O’Connor and Wynton Marsalis for the album Liberty!. The recording was also used throughout the film documentary produced for PBS, Liberty! The American Revolution. This may very well be the first duet ever written for trumpet and violin. Summarized as a triumph by album notes writer Thomas Fleming, he goes on to characterize the duet by saying Marsalis’ sound echoes the noble sadness of this celebration of the heroic death of British General James Wolfe before Quebec in 1759. The piece turns into a musical gallop, evoking the surging seesaw battle Wolfe’s army fought outside the walls of the fortress city. We have a collaboration between the trumpet wizardry of Wynton Marsalis and Mark O’Connor’s extraordinary virtuosity on the fiddle. The music is suited for advanced levels. Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts.Music editing, copying and engraving by Mark O’Connorusing Finale on Apple Macintosh 1997 Public Domain Arranged by Mark O’ConnorCan be heard on Liberty! It was premiered at the closing ceremonies before 100,000 people in the Olympic Stadium, with 10,000 world-class athletes from around the world in attendance, as well as 3.5 billion people from the television viewing audience.Mr. O'Connor wanted to write a fiddle tune that brought celtic sounds from Europe mixed in with the American folk music to give an international flavor to the style. One of Mr. O'Connor's friends and colleagues, Natalie MacMaster, was the artist to first record this music on CD, and she subsequently asked the composer to join her in a version that accommodated both of them on fiddles. Limerock (violin part – vln, cel) MO124BViolin Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor4 pages - 2:20 minutes in length Limerock adapted for violin and cello is an arrangement of one of the most beautiful hoedowns in American fiddling literature. Originally a two part tune, Texas fiddling pioneer Benny Thomasson arranged a version that approximates the one most performed today. Mark O’Connor and Edgar Meyer built upon the Thomasson variations to create a unique and thrilling violin and bass duet that first appeared on O’Connor’s Grammy winning recording, New Nashville Cats. O’Connor has adapted the 2nd part to include violin, viola and doublebass to offer four different versions of the arrangement. Limerock is a fine example of how a tune O’Connor learned by ear as a youth evolved into a virtuoso piece in a classical setting. It is most suitable for advanced and intermediate levels. Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts.Music editing, copying and engraving by Mark O’Connorusing Finale on Apple Macintosh 1990 Composed by Mark O’ConnorLimerock can be heard on Appalachian Journey featuring Mark O’Connor, Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer, Sony ClassicalLimerock can also be heard on Mark O’Connor’s Crossing Bridges OMAC Records, and The New Nashville Cats Warner Bros.
