I had just begun receiving the main ideas for it when a pianist I know locally, Robert Aston, happened to ask me if I had written anything for piano and string quartet. I believe that Quincie “heard� this and that was the trigger and the door unlocking. Because the next thing I knew I was absolutely engulfed in the writing of this work for the next six months.Like all my works, this one is an emotional journey, and my own nickname for it is Quincie, The Comic Healer. Each movement tells a progressive story of the different stages of a journey through a long period of grief, illness, depression and chronic anxiety. The overall mood of the whole piece is extremely energetic, loving, warm, compassionate and audience friendly, and while there is some heart ache in the middle of the first movement, the work is also extremely comical and hilarious in its third and fourth movements. It has a great sense of slapstick humour alongside the deep ache of grief and unfathomable sadness. Many many thanks.Very sadly, in June 2020, the pianist, Robert Aston, passed away from cancer. This marvelous arrangement of Peter Tchaikovsky's Coronation March, sometimes called Festival March or Festival Coronation March, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and other festive occasions. This arrangement keeps all of the intensity and excitement of the original composition and is suitable for high school and college students. Professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (15 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available to the public for the first time. The Coronation March was ordered by the city of Moscow for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III in 1883. It was written during March of 1883 and was performed for the first time on June 4, 1883 in Sokolniky Park in Moscow, conducted by Sergei Taneyev. The music then included excerpts of the anthem, God Save the Tsar. The American premiere was on May 5, 1891, for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City, conducted by Tchaikovsky himself. During the Soviet Era, Russian performances and recordings of the music were revised to omit the excerpts from the Czarist national anthem, replacing it with thematic material used earlier in the march, due to an official Soviet ban on the anthem. Starting with Dmitri Medvedev's inauguration in 2008, an abbreviated version of this piece is played during the Russian presidential inauguration accompanying the entrance of the incoming president, and ends well before the playing in this piece of the Tsarist anthem God Save the Tsar. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, the Coronation March does not have an opus number. It has been given alternative catalogue designations TH 50 and CW 47. Tchaikovsky's Coronation March was originally scored for a full orchestra and written in the key of D Major. Regis Bookshar has now created an abbreviated version, written in Db Major, and has arranged it for a String Quintet, consisting of 2 Violins, 1 Viola, 1 Violoncello and 1 Double Bass. In addition to this arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Coronation March for a String Quintet, other arrangements of this festive composition for various instrumental ensembles are also available. He described the inspiration for the Scenes from Childhood� in a letter to his wife as follows: “ I often seemed like a child to you – in short, I felt as if I were in pinafores again� ..I wrote thirty quaint little things, about twelve of which I have selected and called Scenes from Childhood�. This charming arrangement for a trio of two violins and cello is accessible to intermediate students, amateurs and professionals. I have re-arranged this carol for three violins instead of viola, as a flexible possibility. If you would like to watch a video of a professional quartet playing my arrangement on Youtube, look up my channel by typing Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, O Come Emmanuel. This version is almost identical, though Violin 3 sometimes goes up an octave and passes on the lower notes to the cellist who gets some double stopping! The quartet play it beautifully, but it could also be played by a very young quartet because most of the he double stopping includes one note on an open string. Grade 5 ABRSM could manage it, and possible Grade 3! It will sound mediaeval with the open strings ringing out. The key is a very easy one for strings. However there are a few surprises in the counting so watch out! It isn’t always obvious, but with a few rehearsals you will have a fresh take on a very old carol.
