Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, pot pourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folk elements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his ‘easily playable’ compositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passages so well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties. The popularity of his pieces for tuition purposes, school concerts or youth music competitions remains undiminished to this day. This edition is essentially based on the first printed versions of these pieces – with just a small number of printing errors and inconsistencies corrected without comment.

Key: G major.It was in Madrid in 1771 that two composers simultaneously 'discovered' and invented the string quartet as new musical genre: Luigi Boccherini and Gaetano Brunetti. The string quartets by the Italian composer Antonio Capuzzi, on the other hand, probably are the only ones which were all created in Italy. Like Mozart's contributions to this genre, the Quintet in G major is scored for two violins, two violas and violoncello. Written in concertante form, the work lets all players have their musical say, offering both soloistic virtuoso figures and numerous melodic solos. The work shows Capuzzi's personal chamber music style, a real five-part setting which sometimes seems orchestral. A valuable addition to the quintet repertoire for strings – good playing and listening entertainment guaranteed!

His Quintet in B flat major, Op. 7/3 provides a good opportunity to do that. Like Mozart's contributions to this genre, it is scored for two violins, two violas and violoncello. With the title of this composition, Fever Fantasy, Jörg Widmann refers to its musical air: ‘I often feel Robert Schumann‘s melodic shape to be like the amplitude of a temperature curve: nervous, flickering, feverish, an infinite number of small and large wave crests and troughs within the principal line.’ The composer approaches this sound phenomenon with a setting for acoustic instruments. Nevertheless, he succeeds in conjuring up very unusual sound spectrums. Over long sections, the notation of this score mirrors the musical progressions, containing no concrete pitches but detailed performance instructions instead. Slowly, individual tones emerge from ascending pizzicato lines, colourless sound surfaces, sounds of harmonics roughened by tremolos, and virtuoso clarinet scales, tones that do not reveal their origin until the work ends: C - F - E - D sharp, the beginning of Schumann’s first violin sonata.

Naturally, apart from one opera, his oeuvre consisted mainly of pieces for the flute. In numerous fantasies on excerpts from popular operas (mainly Italian works and the operas of Meyerbeer) he married dazzling virtuosity with tunes that were popular favourites. As Wagner's music seems rather underrepresented in 19th-century popular flute music the discovery of Briccialdis 'Lohengrin' counts as a pleasant surprise, which should delight flute players and Wagner fans equally.

English • German.Theobald Böhm was principal flautist at the royal Isartor theatre from 1816, appointed as a member of the court orchestra in his native city Munich two years later and promoted to principal flautist there from 1830. Concert tours to several European cities established his reputation as one of the leading flute virtuosos of his time. In 1828 Böhm opened a flute manufacturing workshop and revolutionised the construction of the flute with two features: the conical ring-key flute of 1832 introduced the key system still in use today, while the acoustic refinements of the cylindrical bore flute of 1847 have hardly been improved on since then. As a composer Böhm wrote works that show off the best qualities of both flute and flautist. Plate no. 15040 / published in 1857.
