Written during lockdown, this piece is a tribute to the birds of the sea-cliffs. As a family we would often visit these sea colonies on walks in the North West of Scotland. However, the lockdown deprived us of that joy. However, we know at some point we would return. Originally written for TTB solo and keyboard, it is a real family collaborative effort. The words and music are by me ( Peter Burton ) with voices Peter Burton, Duncan Haslam and Patrick Haslam ( my two nephews ). In the video, the paintings were done by my mum ( Morag Burton ! ).
Although original written for three male voices, it could easily be sung by three female voices or three-part choir, particularly children's choir.

In this post-pandemic era, demand for octavos for smaller choirs is on the rise. This lied by Schubert is here arranged for SB voices. Optional notation for higher or lower voices provides additional harmonic texture. Vocal writing is not difficult but a competent pianist would be advisable. The text is a rough translation from the German by the arranger. This would be a welcome addition to the library with minimal voices. It would also work as a duet.

A standard brass quintet with optional trumpet for horn. The piece opens with a solo trumpet and gradually adds voices until it leads up to a modulation where the theme is now in the lower voices with gentle harmonic shifts. The upper voices respond with more motion until things are met with another modulation. This new section is more stayed until another modulation greets yet another modulation with the parts all intertwining amongst themselves and then… a solemn conclusion.

SAATBB version of the great song by Gorni Kramer.

STBB voices follow a simple arrangement: Soprano does the main melody and Tenor, Baritone and Bass do accompaniment: an easy bass line and two voices for the chords.

Baritone and Bass often play upbeat in the first bars of most of the phrases (pretending to be guitars or trumpets) and turn to straight beat in the final measures.

Tempo is fast, thus singing those upbeat at the right speed can be challenging: bear in mind slowing them down produces a global weakening of the entire song: I suggest Tenor2 and Baritone drink some coffee before singing...

SAA voices, (Soprano, the lead, Alto and Contralto the other), come from a Pasquale Amico (thank You!) arrangement and make a very good melody harmonisation.

To add movement to an otherwise great and funny but simple structure, I added few bars to the original work, starting from bar 79 (F mark); here, pay attention to sing in sync, since the section is very rhythmic.

Some background information about the song: written in 1939 under the fascist regime, Kramer was accused of making fun of the fascist hierarch Achille Starace, who used to walk upright in a black shirt, arousing the hilarity of the population. The song thus had to face the censorship of the regime, given that the allusion appeared quite clear.

Many years after the composition, Gorni Kramer declared that the piece was inspired not by Starace but by the maestro Pippo Barzizza, with whom, in 1939, Kramer had had an argument during a performance at the Kursaal in Viareggio.

Apart from many other treasures by Giacomo Meyerbeer, the Choral Treasury series also contains his compositional gem An Mozart. The quartet for four male a cappella voices (TTBB) is based on a text by Ludwig Rellstab. Even in this brief musical bow to Mozart, Meyerbeer's affinity for the opera cannot be denied: He uses a wide harmonic, technical and dynamic range of expression and makes impressive use of the full ambitus of the male choir.
