This piece is dedicated to my great-aunt, Bessie Murdock. It reminds me of her gentle soul and nearness to God in all parts of her life. 

This choral selection is an arrangement of the Tallis Canon by Thomas Tallis. This song includes a section featuring the men’s voices and then the women’s voices. The voices sing in parts and later in a round. You will recognize the words from the doxology that are included in verse four. The fifth and final verse is new and concludes this selection. I hope you’ll enjoy having your choir sing “All Praise To You, My God, This Night�.

A brass quintet with opt. Horn for trombone and baritone TC.for tuba. With a pulsing, marching style introduction the first theme is presented in the trombone supported by the tuba. It is then passed on to the trumpets and then enriched with contrapuntal movement. A melodic motif is now passed about amongst the voices all the while supported with contrapuntal interest in each of the other voices. Next the lower voices present the tune followed by relaxation of a gentle presentation of the tune. After an abrupt slow down, the whole ensemble breaks into joyfulness and continues that way to the end where it makes a final statement of victory.

This is based on the Organ Voluntary that was originally written for the mass for men's voices and organ. It is intended as an optional finale for the Mass for choir and orchestra (also available on this site), but it can also be performed as a separate item. The themes of the choral setting of the mass are taken up by the orchestra, leading to a musical mix reminiscent in some places of film soundtracks. The congregation is blessed by the priest and leave the church in exuberant mood with the music of the Mass ringing in their ears in this orchestral extravaganza. A Woodwind quartet for two flutes and 2 clarinets. The piece gins in a spritely duet in the upper voices and reverses roles with the lower voices carrying the melody and duet lines. All four voices now join in a smooth, serene fashion until it gains dynamic and harmonic strength. A modulation upward with the tune in voice two, and an obbligato-like movement in part one, while the lower parts underpin with a simplistic, though active line. In the last section the parts become more active and excitement abounds until a final flourish establishes the end.

This is a beautiful song featured in the film The Thomas Crown Affair. It's a fairly straightforward arrangement for two baritone parts, but would also probably be fine for any two male voices. The Bari 1 part goes a bit higher than Bari 2. I have other 2-pt versions of this available for upper & lower voices (suitable for a mixed group), and also soprano & alto (or, again, any two female voices). I hope you enjoy it!

Brethren, We Have Met to Worship' is an arrangement of an American folk hymn with a pentatonic melody; the text is by George Atkins. Although quite within the realm of Junior-age choirs, the words would seem to indicate performance by high school or even adult singers. The first stanza, though in unison, could alternate men and women as long as the sturdiness of the tune is maintained. The second, in canon, has the boys posing questions with the girls answers overlapping. This section should be unusually animated so that the listener is swept along with the dialogue. The final stanza, unison with descant, probably would be best with first sopranos on the obbligato, all other voices on the tune. Having the lower women's voices join the men on the melody will fill in the extremes of the part writing and give more possibilities for the divisi in the last few measures. The composer has given some general registration suggestions for performance on the organ. Light, clear sounds should be used that will support the voices as well as emphasize the rhythmic nature of the piece.
