I wanted the lilting tempo in the outer sections to have a medieval minor tone, to work with the contrasting major section in the middle. I very much wanted it to be a sax duet rather than sax 1 and sax 2, so the parts are pretty equally divided. It is romantic in nature, but uses modes and has a few interesting harmonies. It is placed at early intermediate level, about associated board grade 4/5- The youtube link has the full score for you to assess suitability. A dotted quaver semiquaver is the most complicated rhythm. It would be very suitable for concerts, contests, recitals, weddings as well as an incidental piece. 5 minutes in length. I wanted this piece to convey the feeling of the shared warmth of having family and friends meeting over the festive season when everything is done, and now it’s time to enjoy!Written in Concert C major the introduction begins with a bell- like Christmas chime settling into the main theme which is almost like a verse and chorus. The piece has two of these sections with a link between the two. The second section is a different treatment to the first as some of the bell like figurations of the opening are incorporated. There is also a mix of staccato and legato phrasing to give contrast. The Chorus part is repeated before a short quiet reflective ending. The range is two octaves at most and there is nothing more complicated than an eighth note- hence it has been set in early intermediate level. I wanted 2 equal instrumental parts. I wanted a more accessible version to play since most people do not play a string instrument, but wanted to still capture the beauty of the small ensemble. The score is set up with the same rehearsal markings as the string quartet and plays very similar, but some changes to both dynamics and range had to be changed due to the different medium.

He suggested it as a quintet piece (he liked us mostly because we played some of his favorite Dixieland tunes). The result is, well, at least a little bit weird. The original haunting Pat Metheny recording was played on electric sitar, with a high-speed snare drum providing train effect. I wanted to achieve the same thing, so the horns take care of it throughout the piece (with tuba providing it from start to finish). And the song needed a train horn for effect. I wanted to know what chord a train whistle blew, and the Internet told me it was a ninth chord. It begins as a calm and inviting gentle breeze that is comfortable to sit in and then it begins to take off as it moves into the following sections. After a tumultuous journey, the breeze finally settles again and returns to a gentle breeze in the afternoon.When writing this piece, I wanted to keep it simple and easy to listen to, but I couldn’t help but explore where the idea wanted to go. I think that this is a recurring theme for most of the pieces in this album as they have a section that is calm and of a reflective nature but then there are other sections that are more active and agile.It’s something I find difficult to write a piece that sticks to the one style, theme, or mood and really explores it deeply, but something that I’m inspired to do in my future compositions.
