When an acquaintance of mine, Gay Tregaskis, sent me a poem she’d written and told me the story behind it, I was honored to be able to put her beautiful and touching words to music. The story is best told in her own words: When I was expecting my first baby, I wanted an antique rocking chair. I found one listed in the newspaper that said, ‘old, but loved.’ I remember going to look at it with my husband in November. It was old and worn… the seat springs were broken, the fabric was faded and torn. I loved it! We bought it for a forgotten amount and my sweet mother-in-law had it repaired and re-upholstered for my Christmas gift. Our little son was born on January 31st. I spent hours and hours just rocking God’s little miracle. On Mother’s Day that year, I woke up and just began writing. There were only one or two lines I shifted. It felt like all the babes and parents who ever sat in the old chair wanted me and mommies-to-be to understand the precious moments spent rocking and bonding. It still brings tears to my eyes. These words are a gift given to me for my children and all who they touch. Our moments to share pass on fleet feet… especially with our children. It’s a terrific science fiction/horror movie set on a large spaceship, with a predatory creature who is hunting down the human crew one by one. In the interview, Scott talked about the fact that there were scenes he wanted to film and effects he wanted to use, but his small budget prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to make do with limited time and materials. Alien became a hit, and Scott went on to direct blockbusters like Gladiator and Hannibal.What stuck with me was what Scott said about creativity. It is his opinion that the budgetary constraints under which he operated when making Alien forced him to explore ideas and methods he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Even though he would later make movies with ten times the budget, he’s extremely proud of what he and his team did with far more limited resources.When I started writing My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, I decided to give myself a big constraint: I would only be allowed to use the white keys of the piano. This is very different for me; I usually throw in some juicy harmonies. It was an interesting process, and I have to say that I agree with Ridley Scott: limits spark creativity. I’m going to look for other ways to apply this principle.I did go over budget slightly, and used one black key. Every flock has its black sheep, right?

It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they weren’t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on ‘God save the King’, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to ‘show the English what a blessing they have’ with that tune. We don’t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (‘Heil dir im Siegerkranz’).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

I remember being quite disappointed in the majority of entries because the lyrics proceeded to list all the current world conflicts and their proposed solutions. It made for overly long, and ultimately boring, songs. I was haunted by those entries when I went home that night. I lied in bed and thought all I wanted to hear was.... Finally, at a sleepless 2 a.m., I got up and went to the piano and wrote this piece as a response to that. (That line from my tortured dream; all I ever wanted even made it into the song.).   I set it for TTBB voices to provide a closer, tighter harmony to indicate the brotherhood I was dreaming of. Its simplicity and extreme brevity are no doubt knee jerk reactions to the long, boring pieces I heard all day. This piece has been in my drawer for two decades because I thought it was too brief to be of any practical value for anyone, but all attempts I made to lengthen it seemed to spoil it. But it remains one of my favorite and most passionate pieces that I have written, so I have decided to post it 'as is' and let you creative types decide how to use it. Enjoy!. I wrote this piece ​Winter Love​ for us to perform together.Composing a piece for specific performs is, I imagine, something like tailoring a bespoke suit. I wanted to give them something with which they could show off their unique versatility; creating rich, warm, blended sounds one minute and fiery, energetic, even whimsical tones the next. I didn’t want to write just a quartet at the time because, perhaps selfishly, I simply wanted to be a part of it!The title makes it seem like the work is programmatic, but it’s not. 'Journey Home' is a fun piece that contains both a sense of longing to return and an excitement to traverse forward. This work is intended for young players to work on both lyrical and technical playing. I wanted to write something for my own students as the repertoire for young musicians does not always contain contrasting material in such a short work. I also wanted it to include differing meters while still maintaining a friendly melody that can be recognized throughout the whole piece. While it is only about 2 minutes at the tempos indicated, it still has a plethera of phrases that can be crafted to the musicians own taste while still having some guidance for decision making. The tempos are flexible- whether you want to take the intro slower or the 3/4 section faster, I hope you make it your own!

Easy Sailing for Piano was a composition I wrote a few months into the corona-virus pandemic. My dad talked to me about writing piano music like this and almost immediately the idea for this composition popped into my head. I've created maybe over twenty compositions so far in my life, and this was the first one where I knew exactly how it was going to sound from the moment I got the idea. With all the other pieces, I started out with a small idea and grew from there. But as I said, with Easy Sailing for Piano, I knew exactly how the piece would go. Well... There is one thing that's different. Originally, I wanted Easy Sailing for Piano to be a lot longer. The idea was to increase in difficulty the further into the music you went. The problem with that idea was that I also wanted this to be an easy song to learn. It was clear that if I continued the composition, I was going to make it unsuitable for beginners to play. The parts that survived sound really good though. Easy Sailing for Piano should be pleasant to listen to and play. Easy Sailing for Piano is technically a theme and variations. If you don't know, a theme and variations is a musical form. It starts with a melody that establishes the mood of the composition, and the variations basically play around with that theme. Now this piece only has the theme and the first variation. I'm pretty sure you need more than one variation for it to officially be a theme and variations. But, I don't think that matters too much since it's for beginners and not advanced students. In the future, I might write a sequal to this composition. I think I might call it Easy Sailing for Piano 2, or something along those lines. It will have a theme that's similar to this video's, but it will be much, much longer. If you purchase the sheet music for Easy Sailing for Piano, I hope you enjoy it! This is supposed to be a pleasant song to listen to and perform.
