Thanks, John.  Under the Sea is a song from Disney's 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid, composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman.  It is influenced by the calypso style of the Caribbean which originated in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as reggae, which originated in Jamaica.  The song was performed in the film by Samuel E. Wright.  The track won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1989, the first for a Disney film since Chim Chim Cher-ee from Mary Poppins in 1964. Additionally, the song won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media in 1991.

The main melodic material is deliberately simple and rather folk/chant-like. This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a four-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution on an F major chord at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SATB choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. It consists of multiple iron casts of the artist's body, in various poses. These are randomly distributed around the gallery space. This flexibly scored piece is a musical reflection of this artwork, in 6 sections (labelled A-F), for any mixed ensemble, with an untuned percussion part (F). Rhythms and pitch material remain similar throughout. However, following an initial solo statement (A), the texture is continually varied within the context of multiple free canons (B-E). The first piece has a slow introductory feel, with a rising added-note chord sequence alongside a descending bass line, in crescendo. The second piece is based on a 7-bar ground bass (rising a minor third each time), that features considerable textural variation on each cycle, and culminates in a 3-part canon. The third piece explores the whole range of the piano in varied statements of a 10-bar semiquaver toccata theme, featuring canons and a superimposed scotch-snap theme. The fourth piece is cumulative, in four sections, and gradually descends in pitch by alternating hands in a minimalist build up of motifs, each followed by a chordal refrain. The fifth piece gradually builds up a right hand melody over various syncopated harmonies and appoggiaturas, before inverting the role of the hands. The sixth piece is a simple cycle of ascending repetitions of a 10-bar added-note chord sequence, with octave bass line, that rise by a perfect fifth each time. The seventh piece is a varied repetition of the opening movement (thus framing the cycle), with the initial chord sequence now arpeggiated, and with a fuller texture. The cycle is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Essentially, perfomers are free to create a (quasi) improvised piece, using the given text as they wish (for example, in full or in extract; with or without narrator; etc.). It is suggested that the work can even be used in a workshop context with performers, or even other composers, contributing musical material. Klee was fascinated by music (he played the violin) and many composers have interpreted Klee's notion of 'line' as a way to conceive musical melody. Lines on a Walk II is an abridged chamber version of the original Lines on a Walk piece that was flexibly scored in 15 instrumental parts. This second version is specifically written for flute, clarinet, piano, percussion (any 3 apt untuned instruments, plus marimba & vibraphone), violin, and cello.
