It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. Verse 1 gives the option for a single solo voice. Otherwise vocal lines, for two-part (SA) choir or duet, retain the folk tune contour throughout, with fairly simple harmonies and a canon. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of SA choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for duet. The title of the piece reflects its inspiration: the Lantern Tower of Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (1966-67). The tower's sixteen sides contain panels of stained glass, designed by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens. Their effect is to bathe the cathedral in radiant colour, with three plain panels projecting shafts of brilliant white light through the multi-coloured spectrum. The Lantern Tower (Chorales II) aims to illustrate the intermingling light patterns in a series of chorale-like variations, which, like the tower itself, eventually comes full circle. This setting is for solo mezzo-soprano voice, with wind quintet and piano. The piece aims to give appropriate musicial expression to the text. Several key ideas, motifs and chords recur, and are juxtaposed in a mosaic-like manner. The piece focuses on harmonies with added augmented fourths, reminiscent of Messiaen, in an attempt to express joy or even ecstasy. The influence of Berio (Folksongs) can be seen in the doubling, colouring, and sustaining of the vocal line by the wind quintet and piano, creating an 'accidental' form of harmony, as well as supporting the singer. As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment I uses a simple minor key chorale that features a descending bass line. This poignant chord sequence was later used and developed in the composer's 2020 anthem God So Loved the World (also available via Sheet Music Plus). In Fragment I this idea is repeated with textural variation, ascending in pitch, before a dramatic silence. The piece concludes with a further statement of the sequence, now finally with an added melody.
