Test Drive from How to Train Your DragonComposers John James Powell and Michael John Mollo wrote this soaring piece for the soundtrack from the movie How To Train Your Dragon. You know the moment when Hiccup is training his new dragon Toothless and they go soaring through the skies for the first time--this is the melody that plays in the background! I wrote this arrangement for one of my students, Nicole D. Whenever we are searching for recital pieces or fun music to learn, we usually turn to animated movies. (Maybe because I have been told by some of my students that my taste in music is old--but I got tired of getting blank stares when I suggest some titles of the music I listen to!) At least we can connect on film music--especially animated film music! Nicole is the one that suggested this song--I had watched the movie a couple of times, but never really listened closely to the soundtrack, except to know that I liked it. She was my guinea pig while I was arranging the song and I am thankful for her feedback and suggestions for different parts of the music. This piece is ideal as a recital piece or as a fun piece to learn and perform (maybe a summer project!). Durham) which is used for the hymn On Jordans Stormy Banks and Holy Manna ( attributed to William Moore) which is used for many texts, notably, Brethren We Have Met To Worship.  Holy Manna was originally published by William Moore in Columbia Harmony (1825), and both hymn tunes were later published in William Walker’s Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (1835). These eight Chorale Preludes were all written between March and May of 2020, during the worldwide Coronavirus Pandemic. Unlike the earlier companion volumes of shorter English and German preludes, which feature a variety of moods and themes, these American examples all seem to center around the closely related ideas of hope and quiet confidence. While this was not my intention back when I was choosing hymns to work with, I am pleased with the unity of the set. Taken as a whole, they are filled with tidings of comfort and joy. Stylistically, the preludes range from the baroque bounce of Praise Him, Jesus Our Blessed Redeemer, through the sturdy On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand (with its chords sounding as if they had been carved from granite blocks) and a surprisingly delicate I Stand Amazed. There is a fair amount of canonic leading and following in He Leadeth Me; Great is Thy Faithfulness is the expressive heart of the set; and we end by returning to 18th century ritornello models with Blessed Assurance. Through it all I think I have managed to avoid any sense of academic stuffiness - in fact there are several moments which may sound almost playful if not handled rightly.As with the Shorter English and German Preludes, most of these are between one and two minutes in length, and each fits on one or two pages, arranged so as to avoid page turns. As always, durations and sources are provided for your planning.
